    Dropped third strike play

I think situations like this one, and illegal pitches, don’t get called under the guise of “game management” or “don’t go looking for trouble”. As others have said, no where in the rule book is it spelled out that the defense has to know the situation while the offense gets to skate. Some...

    Dropped third strike play

It’s a judgement call. A case could be made that the batter running to first when they aren’t allowed to is in fact interference; the NFHS rule set doesn’t define what “confuses” entails, but in my judgment this certainly is confusing for the catcher in this case. From a game management and...

    Dropped third strike play

NFHS rule 10-2-3-G allows the plate umpire to “make final decision on points not covered by the rules.” In this case, batter, back in the box, run does not count, get back on third.

    Dropped third strike play

I agree, let’s be able to kill the play right away; neither the offense or defense gets penalized, we don’t have to discern anyone’s intent, etc.

    Dropped third strike play

Well, the rule does mention “an act that confuses any fielder.” I think a case could be made that the act of the batter running to first base when they aren’t entitled to confused the catcher. Now, the offensive coach would probably argue, maybe even correctly, that the batter just lost track...

    Dropped third strike play

The NFHS rule set doesn’t define what constitutes “confuses any fielder”, but I think a case can be made for interference. In the USA rule set, 8-7-P states in part, “a runner continuing to run and draw a throw may be considered a form of interference.” Runner closest to home is also out...

    Dropped third strike play

A friend described this recent play to me: Runner on 2nd, 2 outs a 2-1 count on the batter; pitcher throws a change up that the batter swings at misses. Ball hits the dirt before the catcher catches it. Runner on 2nd broke for third on pitch release. Batter takes off for first thinking it...

    2023 NFHS Survey is out

What to do? Excellent question. I’m guessing that some umpires don’t call it as it could be a combination of “contact is part of the sport” and “I’m not making a call that will eject a player” (and maybe her coach). Personally, I think out and ejection is the proper penalty. The powers that...

    2023 NFHS Survey is out

Malicious contact is a rule and call that I think needs some attention. Especially since it cancels obstruction. Yes, sometimes the throw pulls the defender into the path of the runner and it’s just a train wreck, but I think the call isn’t called enough.

Play at the plate. Malicious contact?

Would like to see the NFHS add the NCAA provision.

    What sanctions allow pitch leap?

One set of rules makes too much sense for it to ever happen.

So, off the catcher’s right hip in fair territory?

“hinder”: to create difficulties for I’ve got obstruction.
