A couple of weeks ago, as I was preparing for my annual battle with putting Christmas lights on the roof of my house, I came across the note pictured above. It was a message from myself last spring, when I took the lights down, alerting me to a potential issue with some of the strings. […]

Ken, great point.

I hope that you won't mind if I take this another way. We constantly ask our dds and players to be better players. You will know that your dd plays in a decent program when they ask for them to be a better person. My dd played in a program where they adopt families for Christmas. Brianna has done this her whole life. Her team is planning on using our basement to organize some of this again this year. Also, the coach of the first team she played on asked all of the players to write their parents a letter for Christmas. The one from my daughter written her senior year is still on our refrigerator. It starts, "Dear Madre." The letter then mentioned all of the stuff my wife has done for my daughter and that my daughter loves her so much. At times, it seemed that BB spent so much more time with me because of playing ball. That letter is really powerful and I catch my wife reading it all of the time. It is the single best present my wife has ever received. If I might, I'd like to ask coaches here to consider this post.

That's a great idea CB. Whether the players realize it or not, their parents dedicate an awful lot of time to helping their daughters pursue their dreams, whatever they may be. I was going to say "Give up a lot" but I never thought of it as giving up anything and I'm sure most people here don't either. I absolutely loved watching my kids do what made them happy, and miss those days terribly.

We don't do it for the reward or the kudos, but it's definitely a good idea for kids to learn how to express gratitude for the love and support they receive. One letter is worth all the #1 Mom or Dad coffee mugs in the world.
