By now you’ve probably heard that at the recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) convention, D1 softball coaches finally stepped up to take a stand against early recruiting. It wasn’t quite as strong as those coaches saying “For the good of our sport and the prospective student athletes we hereby all agree to VOLUNTARILY […]

Ther'er are still way too many loopholes. What about a D1 coach contacting a 7th grader's TB coach and going through him? How about, as you said, A D1 coach breaking protocol? A D1 coach that doesn't "Sign" isn't required to follow the rules so to speak. This is all BS as far as I'm concerned. It will only take one coach breaking the supposed suggestions/rules that will lead back to the former established rules which mean nothing. The only thing that will matter is sanctions/penalties (as you mentioned) against EVERY Coach and school, no matter the level of play in the NCAA, that contacts any student, whether by proxy, in person or by personal assistant/AC until their Junior year. Period.

This is a start towards what many of us consider a reasonable recruiting process but nowhere near enough IMO.

I agree it doesn’t go far enough. Unless I’m not understanding the proposal the biggest loophole is it only affects PSA’s and has zero effect on contact with 7th and 8th graders. I like the concept of addressing early verbals. I don’t like anything that makes it even harder for families to talk to coaches and puts so much power in the big name travel programs.

I've considered riseball's proposal and I truly, absolutely agree with it but I believe, that I've improved on it. No contact, whether by proxy or directly, anyone under the official age of 14. If a team is caught contacting anyone under that age, whether directly or through proxy, they will not be able to continue to play a game in their division, let alone in the playoffs, world series or anywhere else for the following 5 years. This will effectively kill their program.

This also means, if they offer, both parties MUST SIGN IMMEDIATELY or within a reasonable amount of time (say 2 months to protect both parties) subject to losing said scholarship offer. ALL coaches that make an offer, whether by percentage or monetary amount, will be held to that amount for ALL 4 YEARS if the contract is signed by the Athlete and her family. They also get 22 athletic scholarships in D1 if they are fully funded and D2 gets 17. Lets see how long this cr@p lasts once they find out how many Freshman in HS fails to deliver. This will take the power out of the colleges hand and put it back in the families' hands.
