A few years ago, when I was still coaching teams, I heard through the grapevine that one of the parents was griping about how much we practiced rundowns. He was a “baseball guy,” and as such was of the belief that rundowns didn’t happen very often. He couldn’t figure out why we would spend so […]

I think practicing run downs is a great way to spend some time during a practice. Maybe it is the age level that my daughter plays at (10u) but I don't think teams practice rundowns nearly enough, and it shows during games. I understand there are so many things that need to be practiced on at 10u but rundowns should be part of the routine.

Ken, I couldn't agree with you more. I was AC for my son's 10-11's little league team a couple years back. During one practice, HC had me working with the infielders and I started to take a few minutes to teach them the fundamentals of a run down. He steps in and says "don't work on that, they don't need to learn that and it's too complicated." Yep, you read that right.

Now he's my son's basketball coach. He's that dad that has to coach all his son's teams, regardless of his knowledge of the game.

We practiced them a lot in All-Stars and even in the regular season that was one of DD's favorite ways to get girls out when she was catching. Helps when you trust your 3b and ss :)

I wish I had practice more with my younger teams when I helped coach. There are so many benefits to doing this stuff beyond just rundowns. Learning how to throw on the run, teaching kids to give a throwing lane, etc. I'm pretty sure I could have found 10 minutes a practice to more of this.

Our first year 12U girls just plain love practicing it. The coaches usually run and they have a blast trying to get them out.

One of my former players commented on the post on my Facebook page. She has never commented on any of them before, unless her picture was in it :) But she said she remembered getting into a couple of long rundowns as a runer, and because of all the practice didn't panic when it happened. So it helps on both sides!
