Normally I like to keep things focused strictly on topics that relate to the game itself. But this is a subject that really should be of concern to any parent whose kids – male or female – are participating in activities where they have long periods of exposure to adults. It was sparked by this […]

The softball coach that you are referring to worked for the city of Tucson. He was in the town, I now live in, Marana. I don't know how to pronounce the name. It was Korean or similar. Nguyen?
I know what he did. He met up with a man and a 5 yo girl. He wanted her dressed as a Girl Scout.
The mother of the young girl came on Eteamz asking what we knew about the coach.
I was interviewed by a radio station, but I had never met the guy.

My favorite sentence from Ken's post: "Will this coach help your young player grow and become the type of person you want her to be, or will he/she teach life lessons you don’t want your daughter to learn?"

And now the requisite anecdote... I forced my daughter to leave a strong and talented team with a Head Coach teaching the wrong lessons. The best 5-6 players (my daughter included) could do no wrong. Miss a practice with no notice? No problem, you're still starting and playing every inning. Miss a Saturday? No problem, you're still starting and playing every inning on Sunday.

I know life isn't "fair" and these types of things happen in the "real world" outside of softball. However, it doesn't make them right and it's not what I want my daughter to see as acceptable.

Thanks Ken. Keep posting on the blog with links here. I read 'em every time and appreciate them.

The cheerleaders story was interesting.

We think we know who is coaching DD.

She is never alone with anyone.

Annoys me that I get put into this position sometimes, only adult with a player.

You can look at this for everything you do in life. Do you know the teachers, the bus driver, the friends parents. It's so important that your kids have a level of trust in you as a parent that they will call you. I've picked DD up from birthday parties where she didn't feel comfortable with the parents. They know that I or DW will pick them up any time any place for any reason if they need us.
