Let’s face it. Whether your activity of choice is fastpitch softball, soccer, basketball, auto racing, marching band competitions, tiddlywinks or something else, everyone loves winning. As Nuke LaLoosh says in Bull Durham, “I love winning. It’s so much better than losing.” (Warning: the full quote is NSFW so turn down the volume.) Yet there can […]

I certainly agree that a team needs to be challenged and play teams that are equally talented or play teams that are a little better. Good post.

My daughter who is 9 years old was playing in a basketball shootout today, this is a 4th grade travel basketball team and 5 of the 8 girls on her team are in the 3rd grade. We won the first game 29-0, won the 2nd game 18-15, and then lost the third game 29-12. The game we lost was probably the worst game they played all year but they just got outplayed by the other team, they were more physical than us and dominated the rebound game.

The five 3rd grade girls could choose not to move up next year and they would dominate the local travel basketball area but I don't see the point of not challenging them next year. As they get older the 1 year age difference and height difference will be less and less each year.

So, at 96 in a row and counting, Geno and the Lady Huskies need to move to the WNBA? FWIW, this is an off year - they will be better and deeper next year.

In high level 18U TB we shoot to win @ 60% of our games. We play games to get better, not to win, unless it is a qualifier or nationals. When I look back at the games we thought were life or death at 12U for a plastic USSSA trophy it brings a smile to my face. I also still get a kick out of coaches who post tryout information for their team bragging about how many cheesy tournaments they won last season.

Love this. If you only play teams you know you can beat, how do you ever challenge yourself? When we were team shopping last year DD was very clear: she wasn't interested in a team that played only this one local org that's basically C ball. She had several teams that did that that offered a spot and one included her best friend, but even so she chose a team that played better competition. I remember once our A team went and played an open tournament that ended up being mostly low B teams (I would call the team we were on an "A" team - we played almost all A tournaments but lost all the time, literally-this tourney was the only one the team ever won all year). We were undefeated and they won rings. She loved the ring because it was different from a trophy but the very first thing she said when we got in the car was, "I don't ever want to play a tournament like that again."

Sounds like your DD has the right attitude, and is a competitor. True competitors love to compete, and the thrill of winning comes from knowing the path to get there was difficult.

Geno has said that everybody wanted to get them on their schedule during this "down" year. Maybe Tara lost Geno's number?;)
Dabears17 Pretty sure Stanford and UConn have a date on the schedule every year it's usually the first week in April but Stanford has been a no-show lately ;)

I did take my DD to Indianapolis last year to watch my second favorite team take a shot at UConn- Syracuse :)
