Yeah, I don't remember/know if the NCAA is still requiring it regardless of schools requirements.

DD1's admissions department tells all prospective students: we don't require it, but if you take it we WILL look at it...... basically said if your transcript is good enough to get you in, the SAT/ACT is only going to hurt you.......only take it if you test well and need it to boost your transcript

OU's acceptance rate is north of 80%. If you can write your name (in crayon or otherwise) you get in here..

Yeah, it seems like that is part of the equation. If you're a softball stud and are committing to a school that takes almost all applicants, there certainly must be more confidence that when you commit you're a lock to get accepted.

I'm kind of curious if there are known cases where someone filled out the 500 word essay on "A meaningful life experience" with "I hit dingers."

DD1's school basically said "don't take em" lol

I have a family friend who said if you're applying to Ivy League schools and you didn't score over (insert insanely brainy SAT score here) to simply not submit the test score at all.

Yes, of course they want to see grades.

Let me modify the question, as it appears some here (not you) have a hard time with nuance.

Ok, so a girl is a stud on and off the field. She's been to camps, talked to coaches. All the "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" has happened, all indications are that she'll get a call September 1 Junior year and she fully qualifies academically.

My question is "what is the application process for this girl?". Does she have to show SAT/ACT scores, does she have to put her heart and soul into writing essays? Does she have to have every i dotted and t crossed. Or it is more "just turn in something and we'll get it worked out"? The coach is not going to lose out on this girl and will do whatever is needed to get her in. And with timing, we aren't where a normal student would apply yet (as the girl is a Junior in high school in her fall semester).
I can speak to how our experience went. Got the call from dream school Sept 1st and set up a visit. We had to provide our NCAA clearinghouse ID# and up to date HS transcripts. Visited and got the offer we wanted DD is ranked 4th in her class so she checked the box for admissions there. She had not taken the SAT at the time but has since and did very well. We did talk about doing the best you could on the admissions essay as she stands to get a good bit of academic money. We will apply for admissions on the same timeline as everyone else unless they ask us to do it sooner. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions please ask.

I think a much of higher percentage of softball "studs" do very well in school compared to football/men's basketball so it is probably not a big deal for most schools. Schools like Northwestern,Duke, Stanford, etc which are trying to draw "studs" but also have very high academic standards are probably the places where you might see some concessions made but I doubt they are very large especially considering softball isn't typically a revenue sport..

Thank you. Congrats to your DD

Generalizations about ACT/SAT test scores are just that. Some schools still require it while others claim it's optional. If your test score is in the mid-50th for entering freshman, it won't do anything but help in terms of admissions, and may even get you some scholarship money. Depending on the school, a top 25% score for entering freshman, along with an otherwise good record, may get you a LOT of scholarship money.

The only generalization about colleges that holds true is that every school is different. Even similar state schools <100 miles from each other may have a vastly different opinion on how bad they want your kid to attend.

I was surprised by this, and even more surprised to see that OSU's acceptance rate is ~70%.

Yeah..I am not. Where does OK rank in terms of K-12 education? The state schools are here to serve their residents so it stands to reason that low K-12 would correlate to low admission standards..
