Should you ever contest a steal of 2nd w/ runner at 3rd?

I'll wager that those runners in those "corners" situations who stole 2B in the WCWS would have been safe without a runner on 3B. Never throwing invites more running. Having the SS cut the throw and throw back home will at least keep a team guessing. Most anyplace else, a good infield can get an out at either 2B or Home in that situation, and occasionally you'll get both.

I have held off on posting- I've probably yapped about this stuff too much…. I’m guessing the college teams are doing this with some speed at 3. Good college teams also have a good plan- dd got yelled at in a scrimmage just yesterday for not being threatening enough at 3 and allowing ss to walk runner back to 1st.

As far as whether you should take a shot at the runners, I think you have to. I can’t find it but unless I dreamed it, I am pretty sure there is a likelihood that both runners score when you allow that runner to go from 1st to second. Some would even say you are better trading the run for the out in most situations.

On the offensive side- I’m a believer in attacking second base with a runner on 3 as soon as possible, as long as you have a plan to do it. Some teams will do this without regard for number of outs

The bold above is the “long story” part.

@Nimrod great post. Very interesting topic.

No one stole against
Long Beach State during 1986 WCWS.

👍💪🫀🥳

Another thing I've noticed in WCWS stats is how successful that the teams are at stealing bases during the regular season but not during the WCWS. They're not as aggressive at stealing and not as successful in general in the WCWS. Just shows that top-10 teams defend the steal far better than some of the mediocre to crappy teams they play in regular season. IOW, they have outstanding catchers.

Or is it 4-6 umps instead of 2?

Ever? Yes. Always? No. It depends on a whole lot of factors.

My favorite is when it turns into a double-play. It takes strong arms, quick hands, game smarts, and a runner that leaves 3B a little late.

DD's team will always throw the ball in 1st and 3rd situations on a steal.. There's a lot to unpack in this situation, mistakes happen, but giving away bases uncontested is no good. I'd say the success rate is similar but a little less compared to regular steals due to the catcher having to check the runner at 3B, probably 60-70 percent?? I find that the runner at 3B almost never tries to advance.

Stealing in 1st and 3rd isn't as common as it used to be now that DD is playing in 18's.

OU typically puts on some sort of play

I never caught so this an honest question. If the call is to throw through or they have a play on, are they taught to check the runner still?
