1. There are more games, specially weekends because there is now 6u TB. LOL
2. Too many, but we need them.
3. Not enough.

Tip to umps:
Be assertive. As soon as the chirping starts, immediately stop the game call the HC over and tell him if the chirping (from coach or parents) doesn't come to a complete stop NOW you are getting thrown out. Period. Don't give him a chance to respond. Walk away and say "play ball". You have the power. Use it.

Just had an ump last week call the "game over" about 35 minutes in. Coach called him stupid. Ump threw him out. AC comes out and ask "why did you throw him out". Ump said "because he called me stupid." AC says "that's because you are stupid." Game over. Ump walked off the field.
Best part of the story is the team still had another game on the same field and guess who was the ump. Ump had no problems that game.
I'm trying to picture the scene where a Target worker is allowed to throw a customer out of the store for calling them a name.

Nope ---- can't see that happening. Why do we allow umpires to be so thin skinned while the rest of the world is forced to remember "Sticks and stones...." ?

Everyone has to grow their own skin.

Really? What are they?. As pointed out earlier, you can make $300 in a 9 hour day of umpiring. That's over $30/hour. No service job pays that. Not even close to that.

Lol...$300 in a nine hour day? Really? Where? Even if someone got $50 per game, which is $10 above the typical rate where I live, they'd have to do six games in those nine hours. Those are either really short games, or there's barely time to take a leak in between. Try that in the southern states during summer, and you're probably eating dinner with an IV in your arm.

Here's some additional reality. Far more time goes into umpiring than what's seen at the field. You don't have to study and train for that retail or service job on your own time and dime, and no retail / service job has anywhere near the up-front and ongoing costs for registration, insurance, travel, and equipment. Some umpires even have to kick a percentage to the assignor. If you're legal, you're getting a 1099, and you're not only paying income tax on that, but also both ends of FICA.

All that for the joy of wearing catcher's gear under baggy pants in 90+ degree heat with parents and/or coaches chirping at you. You'd better enjoy it for reasons more than the money.

Lol...your imagination really needs some work. I remember my DD coming home from (large store retail) work and telling me about the customer who yelled at her. A manager was on top of the situation within seconds and showed the customer the door. Try it yourself...yell at or call a retail worker names and see what happens. You might get one chance to calm down, and then you'll get told to leave. If you don't, the cops will escort you out.

So in your world, it is ok to berate other people because they are being paid?

Umpires are not thin-skinned. Far more parents and coaches should be ejected than the few that actually are.

The real answer is that neither occupation should have to deal with that. The immaturity that allows people to feel it is okay to treat anyone in that manner is what needs to change.

Exactly correct.

Captures it all...what quality umpiring requires. Much more than showing up in a pair of sneakers, dark pants and a blue shirt and calling yourself an umpire as much of the softball world thinks.

Good job Strike2!

Lol your reading comprehension needs some work. I said "Called them a a name". You are talking about someone YELLLING. If you think those are the same scenarios, there is no point in talking to you about anything.

Talk about putting words in someone's mouth............. I never came close to saying what you are accusing me of.
