I am surprised nobody has brought this up yet ... OLYMPIC SOFTBALL!!!!

Japan vs. Australia is airing right now on NBC Sports. USA vs. Italy will be on at 10:00(CST).

I'm glad the diamond sports are back, but it looks like they hopped in a time machine back to the 1980s. We know shorts are a part of the international game (Japan is wearing them) ... and there is something about the way some of the Australian players are wearing hats under their helmets that look like it is hand-me-down baseball gear from their big brothers ... but the field, OY. They set up a temp field on a baseball field. They cut a square section of turf up for the pitching area. There is temporary netting for the backstop and all the way down past the dugouts ... which are free floating benches behind the temp fence ...

I feel like I am going to have to get in the car and drive down to the gas station just to use the bathroom!

Honestly, it is pretty shameful for a presentation of games on a stage like the Olympics. It's what I would expect at a weekend youth tournament playing at a baseball facility.

OK, enough complaining ... it really is GREAT to have you back!

Apparently they only play a couple games in that place and its there as some kind of nod to the tsunami and the earthquake victims. They eventually move to another baseball field downtown. It is definitely not pleasant to the eye on tv

... and Japan just walked off with a run-rule victory over Australia. That was fast!

Run rule ... 15 at 3 innings, 10 at 4 innings, and 7 at 5 innings.

When we turned it on I was pretty disappointed with the field set up. It’s the freakin olympics and they’ve had several years to put something together on a real softball field. It is good to see it back. Japan looks very solid.

I think it has something to do with how it was sold to the Olympic committee..e.g. they piggybacked off of baseball (who I think helped fund a bid) and thought agreeing to use the same fields would make it easier for it to be added to the games. The visual is bad for sure...

Personally it doesn't bother me too much because it doesn't effect the level of play..but if you are trying to sell the game....

Yes the very chauvinistic and corrupt IOC agreed to include softball if costs were down by playing at the baseball field instead of having baseball and softball only fields.

on a side note, what does it say about a bat manufacturer when players are using a bat you made 5 years ago instead of something you manufactured currently? Boy what a downfall over the last 5 years for Demarini

Kind of bizarre since Japan is probably THE place to be in professional softball. At least, that’s what the promo bit on Monica Abbott made it sound like.

Surely they had ready-made stadiums.

I was trying to find more about what @ang2bmd said, but I couldn’t find anything really clear on it. Some stuff about Fukushima and the city nixing a plan for 7,000 fans. Sounds like it will be the same setup in the other stadium.

I haven't caught any of the games on TV yet. I'm surprised they didn't have better facilities for softball. Then again, they could have held softball and baseball inside the Tokyo Dome...unless their equivalent of MLB wouldn't allow it. Also, I heard of the possibility of a Typhoon in the area.
