From last month at a showcase weekend in Las Vegas...

Late to the party and overly critical while clicking around randomly... I have an obstruction on the third one ... and that was a darn fine play on the last one.

Can I nominate the thread for best thread title ever?

Obstruction? I'm not seeing it. How was the runner impeded? You might be right. I'm always open to learning something new.

Here's a secret....Video lies and umps don't always get it right. She didn't quite get the tag on the runner. Shh...it looks great for the highlight reel.

I second the nomination!

VERY POSSIBLE @Eric F dd's highlight video in the umpire forum could provoke a smathering of discussion!

Just view the entire video.
Then each poster determines their own rule callings.
For travel rules.
High School rules.
NCAA rules.
Ohhhh and friendlies... ;)
Clean plays or hmmmmm?

Really Enjoy

She sets up into a good spot, but her left foot kicks out between the plate and the runner before she catches the ball. Watching it at 1/4 speed though, the runner did not change her path. As she catches the ball, she pulls her leg back out of the way before the runner gets there ... maybe I was too quick to jump on that one! Had the runner altered her course or been prevented from reaching home, I think I would have had a good call. Maybe I need to tear the rule apart again ... :giggle:

(Also looking back, her fielders bailed her out on the first two throw outs. Neither throw went to the bag. Could be the one at third was designed that way since F6 was running all the way over to make the cover?)

No secret and I'll admit it (though many won't) ... umps don't always get it right! :giggle:

Same fielder on both plays. Maddie and her are crazy in sync with each other, and she is the best SS Maddie has played with for receiving throws and tagging runners (very quick hands). Maddie's words..."I just throw the ball, and I know she will be there". Maddie returned the favor on the two tags at home where SS's throw was on the 1B side of the plate, but Maddie was still able to get the outs.

In today's games, runners were 0-for-2 in their attempts to steal 2B.

I talked to Maddie a about where she targets her throws. She doesn't aim for the base. Her intended spot on throws to 2B is about a foot to the right and a foot off the ground, but she also adjusts for the speed of the runner. If the runner is slow, she may place that throw further towards 1B, to give the runner even less chance of getting all the way to the base, and maybe slipping under the tag. She may also delay her throw, or take a little velocity off so the ball isn't getting there too early, and giving the runner a chance to hold up and get in a pickle. It's better to get the runner out with 1 throw than 3 or 4.

Love the videos posted in this thread. My daughter is only 9, so she gets inspired watching all of the older girls in those videos.

Here was her last year at age 8 throwing out her first runner in 10u (she played up that year).
