My 11 y/o switched to catching at the end of the season, and has really taken to it. I've started taking her to catch at one of our pitcher's private lessons a couple times a week. We are not paying the private coach (pitcher's parents are), we are just piggy-backing off the lessons to get reps (and break in her mitt). Is this the general etiquette, or should I be offering the parents or coach something?

You’re doing them a favor - there shouldn’t be any expectation of cost-sharing or other payment from you.

Unless the parent would rather sit on a bucket for a 1/2 hour, getting his or her shins beat up, and feels you’re taking away valuable parent-daughter time. :)

If anything, the parents of the pitcher should be offering your daughter a little something to catch for her. Often parents will offer $5 or $10, or maybe give the occasional gift certificate.

One suggestion I have is to make sure your daughter uses it as her practice time too. For at least part of it use good stances, and work on framing and blocking. If she approaches it like she hired the pitcher to throw to her so she can learn to catch she will get a lot of value out of it.

Catching at lessons is good as it adds listening and learning from the pitching instructor. What to look for a pitcher should be doing.

Catching at different instructors lessons,
will learn there is more than one approach to pitching! ;)

Catching a workout
(no lesson)
is good because it is
'self leadership' and a commitment to our position that directly interacts with eachothers position.
(Develop timing that is not controlled in a lesson environment)

To piggy back this thread...
Have catchers available to catch for pitchers in so cal.
Long bch & Riverside areas.
Pm if interested. :)
