Just a question - is it normal for 3B to have the most errors on the team. Or what is the % of errors for which position? On DD's HS team and her old travel team - 3b always had the most errors - but they also tend to have the most balls hit their way. I always thought SS usually got the most chances.
I have always thought that without a doubt, 3B is the toughest position to field. Most hitters are right handed so the ball is more likely to be hit to 3B than 1B, and the ball comes to 3B a lot more quickly than it it does to 2B or SS, and 3B has to field bunts and get the ball to 1B with no hesitation. Outfield doesn't even make it into the discussion.

So on DD's new team she has been practicing SS/3B/CF - she really hasn't played 3B much - I remember maybe a few years back in rec she would play 3B occasionally.
Scrimmage this weekend - her coach had her at 3B - only had one ball come that she fielded easily but now I'm scared for her.

My daughter has been playing SS and 3rd on her 16U team. It's her first year at 3rd, she's primarily a SS. If you're scared for her being at 3rd due to the speed at which a ball gets there, work with her on when to be up and when to be back. Also take her out and hit tennis balls at her with a racket....it'll be allot faster than what she'll see most of the time at 3rd.

She'll get comfortable with it and you'll start to feel better after a few games. My DD didn't like it at first because it was so new and so close, but I think she digs it now. Lots of action and no time to let the brain get in the way.

Have her do glove work on her knees focusing on fielding the ball out in front and her eyes below the ball. Start with throwing the ball then move to fungo

when playing, start with the glove close to the ground. Our instinct is to go up and protect our face so always play ground up.
Teach forehand and backhand glove movements to be at the ankles without going up first

anticipation is a great tool. Know what pitch is being called, the hitters swing,

I looked and our Short Stop and 2B have the same amount of chances...excluding catchers...which I know that is the way it is scored but catching strike three shouldn't count because it interferes with the ability to evaluate their performance at other positions . We have a fast pitcher so 2nd gets a lot of balls from right handed batters.

Excluding catchers I think fielding percentage is a better metrics than number of errors.

Theres some great video of glove work and fielding drills from knees in catching forum. Has great footwork drills also. Moving body laterally and horizontally.

Her travel coach works with them a lot with hard hit balls at them at 3rd so I think she's getting used to it. She def will continue to wear her mask. But SS is much easier for her ;)
Thanks for the practice ideas too!

The coach does a lot of those drills with them too - so I'm glad her new team seems to be teaching actual stuff!
