I was wondering if any of your daughter's have done indoor longtoss...(see the Wasserman link below.) I'm thinking ahead to the cold days and early sunsets here in the northeast. I'm curious how you would approach this in say a basement or garage with a tarp setup on a bownet. After a full arm warm-up, would you throw 3-5 throws at say 50% intensity, then ramp up to 75% intensity until you get up to 100% intensity? Any thoughts on how to make this work with underhand long toss would be greatly appreciated.

Semi-related, I am told Wasserman and Tincher are pairing up to produce some stuff (??? drills, lessons, documents, I dunno) for pitchers. If nothing else, I'm looking forward to reviewing it.

Clearly you can do individual long-toss as is done in the linked videos into screens and nets.

We've also done Jaeger-style 'long-toss' as a team in a basketball gym. It's not perfect but it can work if the focus is on mechanics and 'loosening up' the arm/shoulder. Girls at opposite ends. Start by getting as much air under your throws as the ceiling will allow. Really focus on the Wasserman/Jaeger-style arm mechanics and not short-arming, etc.....make it as much about the focus on mechanics as is it the actual throw.

As they loosen up move from getting air under throws to 'pulling down' until they are firing hard pull-downs across the gym. You'd be surprised at how much of this you can do in the gym especially with younger players that wouldn't be throwing across a football field anyway. The bigger softball vs. a baseball also lets you do more with less distance. Another way to look at it is if you start a good program in the fall outdoors doing it indoors in the winter can keep it going until you can get back outside again (if you are stuck in the midwest like me vs. being lucky in better year-round weather).

I have a softball that has a parachute attached to it... I can't find a link for it, and for the life of me , I can't remember what it's called.
However it it extremely difficult to throw this ball any distance at all... It's basically long toss for short distance!!!
Sorry I can't remember it's name

Im in the Mid-Atlantic/NE as well, and coach high school varsity. When we start our winter open gym workouts we'll start "long toss" into our indoor cage to help get our arms in shape, because like you know, who knows when we'll actually be able to get outside. More than once, we don't get on dirt until our first game. I like it because our cage is 12 feet high and lets us really throw uphill.

If you're throwing into a tarp or a net, I would try to get it set up to where their angle of release is pretty high. Is there a way to possibly suspend it from the ceiling? Long toss isn't like throwing pull downs or just throwing hard on a line. You really want to throw uphill. Also, you want to make sure you're arm is really stretched out before you start. Make sure she listens to her arm.
