I know there is one softball org that has a bunch of players spread out geographically. They'll then pick players for a tournament/showcase based on who is available and who can travel for that tournament.

Having a large number of players is apparently a common thing on baseball travel teams. A family friend's son has around 25 players on his team. There's a travel baselball team that comes to practice at the facility my daughter hits that has 20+ kids.

I don't understand it. I think 12-13 players on the team is ideal as it accounts for injuries or someone just having a bad tournament. Anything over 15 and you have parents paying not to play.

I think pitcing rules in baseball are different, so they need more pitchers (ie once they pitch, they need (or at least should have) several days rest before they can pitch again.

DD’s team has 17 - this is at the 18u level. We have 3 pitchers that are pitchers only so that leaves 14. We carry that many because 1) HS girls often have other obligations and 2) that many players fosters an environment of where every girl works as hard as they can to earn their position. There is a added benefit of being able to scrimmage as a team at our weekend practices.

At first we weren’t sure we wanted DD to play on a team with that many but when we realized most showcase teams around this area had that many players we just had to suck it up. Now I’m a firm believer in why they have that many players. It is making my daughter into a stronger player.

Substitution rules are also different as well a pitcher leaves they can't return to the mound either.

This is why baseball rosters are large. Pitch counts. Days rest are determined by number of pitches thrown. At younger levels this means that almost everyone on the team can pitch if needed. As they get older they (of course) have dedicated pitchers. Those pitchers may only be able to pitch one day per tournament. I've actually seen high level orgs fly a kid in to have him pitch on a Friday and then fly him back home since he can't pitch again that weekend.

The substitution rules are very different in baseball. Fastpitch has it easy so you can get along with a smaller roster

20+ brings in a lot of bucks

That's on the big side even for a college roster. I don't understand why anyone would sign for that with tournament ball.
