Is bunting considered "old softball"

I agree 100% with the recently graduated player, now coach. Playing small ball ensures that your team will finish games with a small number of runs. A bunt is a wasted out. On the younger levels, having a good hitter bunt makes no sense at all. More commonly, a poor hitter is told to bunt a lot just to avoid a strikeout, which ensures that the player never develops into a good hitter. As players get older and fielding improves, bunting is just giving away an out and you only get three of those per inning. I have seen a lot of potentially big innings fizzle out because a coach gave away an out or two calling for bunts. Bunting certainly has its place, but most coaches are just lazy and call for them without looking at the big picture.

Since I started this thread (which went in directions unforeseen), I will end it.

From the original post I have learned:
Bunting is just another tool to be used when the odds and abilities of both sides favor using it.
The statistics may not necessarily correlate identically from bb, so while looking at them for success rates understand that.

To those who describe MLB games as boring:
I enjoy watching the good teams play in both MLB and fastpitch softball and try to think along with the coaches/managers. There is so much data which managers/coaches have that goes into decisions. That makes most games interesting to me. Not every game is a game 7 of the WS but most games are pretty interesting. MLB wants you to fall in love with the team, buy their gear etc., that I don't do. We tailgate outside and go in for the game, buying nothing but tickets. Try it.

most interesting part is watching how many home runs have been hit in a row in batting practice and how far they go into stands....to me

After that.....its a snooze fest until 8th inning usually. And # games in season is so ridiculous....most have no meaning to them that you can see until nears end.

The number of games is high. I believe it should be 100 games, with minimal interleague. Remember even barring injuries teams cannot play their best lineup every game the way they can in Basketball and football. The way it is now you play 162 games in 180 days and with rainouts there are doubleheaders. Lots of games in a row, and the travel is a real factor in baseball. You need days off or your reaction time will be slower. At most NBA plays 2-3 consecutive games and thats just a few times a season. And usually 3 games a week. NFL travel??? How can they call consecutive road games a road trip? They are in the visitor city for about 48 hours, then back home. Practice at home all week and repeat 48 hrs.

It's fun beating teams and not even getting the ball to the grass. As soon as they start actually fielding the ball, if they can we start to hit away.

A great situational weapon when done right. The only thing better are the HR's when the bunter's are already on.

younger ages bunting is gold... like previously said i just watched my DD finish her 18u season and the last 2 years I saw the bunting game was used a lot less than 10u - 15u. stronger players and mostly committed players you play against at 18u and bigger hitters so the coaches want to see home runs I guess rather than manufacture runs like the good ol days. lol.

I've played and coached baseball at very high levels and I have coached fast pitch at high levels. Even played a luttle fastpitch in the day.. Thers are far more similarities than differences.

2017 Home-To-First Leaders and Laggards

Baseball gets home to 1st slower than fast pitch. That's were the similarities end?

I'll bite the hook. Beside I know this 625 character. He's baseball mean I'll give a nicer answer or at least my interpretations

There's a ton of similarities once you get the male female parts out of the equation. Baseball has 90 ft bases that why it takes longer. Average men will typically run 24ish fps women around 20. Baseballs are hit and thrown faster so the bases are further. Pitchers are further as well. All that considered the differential of safe/out plays at the bases and steals are almost identical

Grass is an equalizer in baseball. It slows the balls down if you has grass in fastpitch would never get a fast runner out. Dirt on a baseball field and just wave as the ball bounces past you.

Pitching reaction times are the same. The field geometry is the same. Bigger deeper fields in baseball because of the ball speed.

Take time to crunch the numbers and it's shockingly similar. Don't take my word or anyone elses. Check it out for yourself. Baseball players see it, but FP players love the decide and get offended for some silly reason

Must apologize to all for being an rear. Round balls, round bats and field geometries are the same but I cannot take the male female parts out of the question, both physically and mentally, especially the mental.
