Pritzker just announced tightened regulations for all sports (schools, travel, etc.) starting August 15th. Different sports are categorized as Higher, Medium, Lower risk.

Specific to softball, considered 'lower' if able to maintain 6' separation in dugouts/areas around dugouts. 'Medium' if that can't be done. Right now, it looks like 'lower' allows for practices and games, but no tournaments or out-of-state games. If 'medium' no games allowed.

IHSA just announced they are moving contact sports (football, soccer, volleyball, etc) to spring. Part of doing that is all the normal spring sports have their schedules revised. Typical year in Illinois, high school softball starts March 1st-ish and ends around late May (later for varsity teams that advance in playoffs). Next spring, the revised season is listed as May 3 through June 26th.

Not sure how other states work, but in Illinois, if you are on a high school team it is against IHSA rules to play for your travel team. So it's almost July before high school aged travel teams will even be able to practice together.

But would this allow those girls to play spring tournaments/domed tournaments with their travel team as the high school season hasn’t started yet?

That's something I was thinking about too. In theory, we might be able to play in April, although northern Illinois weather doesn't always cooperate with that.

Between the new state guidelines, high school schedule, and what will Covid be like by spring...... the idea of budgeting and scheduling really makes my head hurt, and we haven't even started it yet. Still 2 more weeks of this summer to play.

That is normally the case in California but this year they are going to allow an exception for travel/club play during HS play.

I received an e-mail forwarded from one of the officials’ associations to the north of me. I can not vouch for the veracity of these statements and will withhold my thoughts, but ...

It seems schools are looking at starting “club” teams and playing anyway.

PONY is trying to put together some sort of fall offering for all levels of play.

Some of the summer collegiate league teams are looking into unsanctioned, unaffiliated 16u and 18u baseball programs.
