Perfect Game Softball Tournaments

The baseball guys that I talk to love them..... I hear that they are trying to get into softball also and people are saying if they do, that it will basically ruin all of these showcase tournaments once it catches on. Their tournaments are very data heavy.... They track EVERYTHING from what it sounds like and all the information is provided in electronic player profile sheets.

thanks for the info, I am seeing it is heavy in the data collection. Their approach to the showcase tournaments are interesting. Looks like their baseball program is 4-5 years ahead of the softball program.

Why would it ruin the showcase tournaments? Many of these showcases are run by TB organizations, and the fields that they play on have TB organization people on the boards. If their product is that good, then the TB organizations will partner with PG in conjunction with their showcases. I didn't listen to this episode, but it looks like Scott Smith with the Bombers might already have some things working behind the scenes with PG. Scott is big on data.

Maybe we are talking about two different things. Showcase(team) vs Camps(individual). A typical softball showcase is a team event where you play 4-6 games with possible bracket play. Sometimes a showcase might have a camp the day before that might involve capturing data such as: ball exit speed, 60 ft sprint, Home to 1B time, overhand velocity, grip strength, pop times, launch angle, Pitching speeds, etc. Camps are typically organized by a TB program and run by the college coaches. On Deck Softball runs their own camps across the country and are highly valued by college coaches. High Academic camps(Head first Honor and Pennsbury). Mark Mulvany was doing a nice job with his Scout Program until he became an Asst college coach. If PG can come in and offer the softball community something different, higher perceived value, better exposure, better organized, easy access then they may have a place at the table. If the college coaches are asking for it, then they will find a way to make it happen. There are WAY more baseball players in country with way more programs and there is a definite need for a method to separate players based on skills and data.

I can't speak for baseball recruiting, but in softball the personal networks and relationships are a real thing. Certain colleges seem to recruit from the same TB organizations due to historical success of programs, system, successful players, preparedness to play and practice at the next level, friendships, etc. College coaches rely on the TB coaches word that this kid is a good fit for their programs. TB coach says, I have pitcher I want you to look at. College coach shows up at the game(or reviews video), evaluates the player. Gives a thumbs up or thumbs down. Sets up a college visit or gets an invite to their next camp. Kid gets an offer. Yes, things are different now. The 2021/2022 parents are all up in arms about how their kids are getting screwed since the D1 coaches are in dead period. Guess what. That doesn't mean the coaches have stopped recruiting. They have to fill their spots, and they WILL fill their spots. Do you think the coach is gonna start their season with no freshman? As we have seen and heard, there is less room at the scholarship table. This is why it so important to find the BEST fit and be open to all opportunities.

I agree with all that.... I was talking with a guy last week at a tournament who was there with his daughter, while his son was at a PG event..... His son is a pitcher and hitter. He pulled up his sons stats from his games that were going on. It had his in game velo for every pitch he threw and his accuracy rate on those pitches. It showed in game run times..... home to first and so on. It had exit velo on his in game batted balls and trajectory of those hits. With a break down of his batting stats. They also provide a scouting report on the player and all games are recorded. I believe he said that the cost to attend was $200. If things continue to go the way they are going, I don’t see how this wouldn’t be beneficial to a college coach. If PG starts to catch on on the softball world the players or teams will have to make a choice on what events they want to attend. IMO the REAL data supplied by PG gives them the upper hand.

I agree with all that.... I was talking with a guy last week at a tournament who was there with his daughter, while his son was at a PG event..... His son is a pitcher and hitter. He pulled up his sons stats from his games that were going on. It had his in game velo for every pitch he threw and his accuracy rate on those pitches. It showed in game run times..... home to first and so on. It had exit velo on his in game batted balls and trajectory of those hits. With a break down of his batting stats. They also provide a scouting report on the player and all games are recorded. I believe he said that the cost to attend was $200. I bet the MLB (See Sirius MLB tag)is totally working behind the scenes to subsidize the costs or at least some major sponsorships as it ultimately benefits them. You better believe Pro Scouts are in attendance or keeping tabs on the upper echelon players. I don't know if they can be as successful with softball as they are with baseball just because of the number differential. It would be nice though. Head First Honor Roll camps on Long Island has both baseball and Softball. I might be a little off but they run 3 or 4 weekends in a row for baseball and only one softball weekend during their summer run. More boys chasing the dream. They do offer a Florida and a SoCal camp in the fall too. By the way, that is the best run camp my DD ever attended. Pricey, but worth it. And we got to tour Long Island and NYC.

Very true..... they have to have some type of major backing to provide all of this tech and MLB would have the most to gain, which softball doesn’t have

My understanding of the showcases run by PG, you attend as an individual and are assigned a team. You play the games with the assigned team and everything is tracked and evaluated by PG. They then make available all scouting reports with data available.

Our organization has been approached to work with them to host a "standard" tournament. Trying to evaluate whether it is a good fit.
