As a HS teacher in So Cal I did a spit take when De Santis compared opening schools to Home Depot and Walmart being open as well. He obviously has no clue what a classroom is like with 35-40 students packed tight together in a classroom and some that have no windows at all and doors that are to be shut and locked (new policies in effect due to school shootings).

Our district as others are..are deciding this week what model (all in, hybrid or online) eqch district will give parents options. As a teacher Ill need to be there 5 days a week. How many students in my classes? Who knows..maybe 1/2 of normal? Masks no masks? Do I wear mask? Imagine trying to police the kids wearing their masks? UGH... I'm 51 and know older teachers that are struggling with the decision to go back. I definitely am not thrilled at what lies ahead.

OU has a masking policy for in-person classes this Fall. We as instructors are expected to turn in students who do not adhere to the masking policy when they are in our classes...I wonder what that would do to my end of the semester evaluations in particular if the students have to pick me up off the ground a few dozen times after I pass out lecturing with a mask on??

Anonymously would nip that.

Planning will provide safer situations for public things. People will have to continue deciding for themselves what they think safer in public is. Then act accordingly.

People in almost all employment settings have been making adjustments. Uncomfortable or not the workforce continues.

He was asked during that week if his recommendation was made based on the supply of masks. I'm almost certain it was on CNN. He denied that assertion, So either he blatantly lied or was incompetent.

So.... I went back to research some articles from around March 01.

It was in fact, the US Surgeon General that pleaded for Americans to stop buying masks becasue they were in short supply. My apologies.

Fauci made the case that mask-wearing would make Americans complacent, and would losen habits of distancing, hand washing, etc. and that masks might make people touch their faces more than normal. (it was a '60 Minutes' interview, not CNN, BTW)

Redfield (head of CDC) also advised the general public not to wear masks during this time period.

As well as the WHO.

So, it's pretty plain that the understanding of the virus, and how it is transmitted has evolved over time. And so has the official messaging.
Which makes it important to call out the dangers of referencing messaging from March 01 and applying it to July.

What i do know, is that whatever steps and policies NY and other New England states instituted, and continue to practice - it worked, and is working.

For some it has been more than an "uncomfortable (a deadly decision)." No one should have to decide if employment is worth risking their life.

Do you foresee most teachers showing up for work ?

It seems like we’re asking a lot of teachers. In some areas what’s being asked would violate their contracts (on top of the health risks).

I go back and forth on whether the east coast and to a lesser extent, where I'm at in Chicago really did things right, or if we just got hit so hard earlier that it looks right now.

For the mess Arizona seems to be, their deaths would still need to be over 5x higher than they are to reach New York/New Jersey levels. Or almost double to reach Illinois (mainly "Chicagoland").

People rip on how Texas has handled things, but their deaths would need to be about 15x higher to reach New Jersey levels.

In the end, I wonder how much it matters. Seems like the virus will eventually get everywhere and hopefully then burn itself out. Just seems like it's a constant plan of "wait 2 weeks".

My son is "attending" Arizona State starting in August. Their plan is to have everyone on campus, but most/all classes will still be some mix of in-person and online. They are allowing full online too, for people that might not be comfortable with heading to Tempe just yet. My son emailed all his potential instructors to see if any had some feedback on how hard it might be to keep up if he went with all online for fall. The one actually replied that she understands him wanting to stay home, and that she doesn't want to go to live classes either...
