Sorry to hear about your DD's shoulder injury...

My daughter (pitcher/1B) just hung up her college cleats this spring due to chronic pain in her elbow.

We tried everything to help her elbow... w/o success 😟

Trying to play in pain for the past 2 years... she wanted to move on and focus only on school...

It was a tough decision.

However... she has been accepted into a local college's Nursing Program - another "life adventure" has begun!

@FP26 We are praying for a successful surgery and speedy recovery for your DD.

Thank you very much. This thought has crossed my daughter's mind as well. Her goal is D-PT which requires 7 years of school. She loves her field, but realizes that the course load will become aggressive at some point. She hopes to continue playing, but like your daughter, playing in pain has become too much for her. Only time will tell if she continues or not. Best wishes to your daughter. Yes, it is definitely a tough decision, but it sounds like she has her priorities right. That's great for her.

It will all work out they way it is supposed to. Does that include softball? I really hope so. Keep us updated for sure!

My DD informed this week her back has been really bothering her to the point that it could not be ignored any longer. She had to visit the trainer. Her back has bothered her off and on for sometime and we have most ignored it. The trainer said that her lower back was very hard and tight. DD said she thought it was because she was so strong! HA! She said that they were starting to apply cupping therapy and ice baths every day. I was kind of impressed. If I am paying for it, she might as well take advantage of all that is available.
I too, get a little worried that it could be worse, as I sit here with a tweeked back. Just schedule a Thai Massage for this morning, which offers great relief and I like this technique better than your typical massage.

So the surgery was a success. They did not find a tear but there were some other minor things that needed to be cleaned up. She has a follow up visit with her surgeon next week and could possibly return to school at that time. We are currently unsure about the next steps although her doctor suggested several months of intense PT before she should start softball activities again. She apparently has some physical issues that the doctor believes contributed to her problems to begin with. The PT program will be designed to improve those issues.

I had severe shoulder pain, 3 cortisone shots then an MRI. Then surgery to repair a torn labrum and removal of a bunch of scar tissue. Then PT. After all the PT my shoulder was stronger than ever before. She's got this.

shoulder injuries are tough. in my misspent youth, I separated shoulder, givne my age, ortho wanted to do surgery, during the explanation, said it would be a 60-90 minute procedure. 3 hours later, when he checked on me post op, said what the xrays did not show was that if there was a tendon or ligament in my shoulder, I tore it.

keep on the PT, losing shoulder mobility really sucks. cannot do anything hands over my head now for more than 30 minutes at a time (ie hanging xmas lights, etc.).

Just wanted to provide a quick update. DD's strength is returning and her ROM with her right arm is better than it has been for a couple of years. She has also been dealing with a scapular rounding issue or rounding of the shoulders, primarily on her right/throwing side. Her PT explained this is typically caused by weakness in the scap area. She has been working to improve this. The PT is not sure if this contributed to the injury or was a result of the injury; chicken or the egg I guess...

Anyway, she has been throwing now for a couple of weeks and has regained her overhand zip. Always had one of the better arms on our TB team. She just started pitching recently and is starting to ramp it back up. She asked me to get out the Pocket Radar yesterday and I clocked her at 55. At this stage of her progress, I will take that. She was never really a flame thrower. She typically cruised at 58. She was only ever clocked at 60 one time and I wasn't even present for that (pitching coach clocked her). Prior to the injury she was struggling to get 53 on a regular basis and was starting to feel pain even at that. She still has 3 months to get ready for tryouts in the fall, assuming her school is back on campus by then. She feels confident that she will be able to get back to her previous cruising speed by then.

Glad to hear she is getting better. I have read (Jaeger) and believe that weakness in the scap area can cause injury for both the underhand and overhand throw. Not a quote but he basically says that you can only throw as hard as your scap allows you to. Big proponent of long toss.
