Love this post. We use the following rules (this might be wrong):

1. No runners on - pick.
2. Fast runner on 1st or 2nd - pick.
3. Slow runner on 1st or 2nd - block.
4. Any runner on 3rd - block.

We have a few other scenarios based on count, inning, score, but at 12u that isn't being recognized all of the time.

However, You have brought up something that we are not doing......we actually don't practice glove work with catchers enough. Both of my catchers are strong infielders as well, but it would certainly make sense to start to add this practice more frequently.

Thanks for the great ideas.
Awesome! Appreciate applying thinking and development!

In all reality this thread topic could be used at any position by every position player! Like what we as dad’s / coaches were taught growing up, or what we firmly think in our minds is THE only way to do something, and what really works best for each individual player or scenario that just may be slightly different than what we think it should be?

Example.........
**What foot do you want your SS or 2B to lead with when backhanding a ball?

**What stance / position do you want your infielders in when the pitcher is in her delivery?

Just two examples, we could go on and on. Is there really any true right or wrong answers here..........one way or the highway?

Good stuff RAD, beats posting “which bat?” threads! ;)

Yes !!! Look for success !!!

Each position has standards and expectations.
Players/athletes have different attributes/abilities.
Look for the success their individual abilities bring to the position.
See if their talent meets the expectation. Just might set a new standard on the field!

Hitting mechanics seems to be the most picked on.

Than you RADcatcher for the thread!

My DD is a 15 YO catcher, has had a LOT of infield training, short hops, etc. and over the years has incorporated your approach to her catching. Fields a lot of those "in the dirt" pitches as a short hop coming up read to throw. A benefit to this, at least in our experience, is that this is noticed by both the runners and coaches and they are much less likely to go/send. It is not uncommon for her to go through an entire game (with multiple runners on) with no attempted steals.

RADcatcher... LOL That's her favorite thing to do... When we see runners attempting to take an aggressive lead, her mom and I look at each other and say, "here we go, she's going to her happy place!"

DD is a 14U catcher who started in LL at age 9. Glove work is really good and in all honesty has probably affected her blocking skills because she feels she can pick anything, and usually does. Just started with a new team over winter and they immediately starting working on and improving her blocking skills. My real point is that their starting catcher is a joy to watch and is actually a better and quicker thrower from her knees. My DD is more of the traditional stand and fire. Both are good from my viewpoint, and my my eyes have been opened to accepting the throwing from the knees. I grew up a baseball catcher and physically my body doesnt allow me any longer to demonstrate proper technique(5 knee operations), but as a catcher situational awareness and preparation will help you decide whether to block or attempt to scoop. Love the opinions and rationale for them. Cant wait for all these girls to be able to get out and play this great sport again.

In the case of the current catchers on DD's team, the answer to the question posed in the thread title would be a resounding no....

Hate that for you pattar! To me watching top tier catchers is such a treat, and there's so many different aspects of a great catcher! The skill set is of course one, the main one! But the catcher that can also verbally run the show is what I love. We've been blessed to have been around some dang great catchers that would have also made an excellent quarterback!
