At what point do you cancel the season, start talking about refunds

A wrench might have just been thrown into HS or TB in Illinois. It is being reported, perhaps rumor, that the IHSA is contemplating extending the HS season through June. As you all know, I am a HS coach. I am not in favor of that. Too many parents have already planned their TB trips and vacations.

That would be a whole new set of impossible choices for my senior.

IHSA should bare minimum let them play travel on the weekends.

If I was looking at in from a travel player's aspect that is probably the worst option that IHSA can make about this year's softball season. High School softball is just not that important to start missing travel tournaments for.

Personally I would rather see IHSA cancel the entire season, or play conference games only and go into the playoffs.

So cal using students h.s. season, which regular season over end of May.
Calculating if h.s. games start
April 20th. Plus are able to schedule double headers on saturdays. Where several h.s. play eachother to catch up games.
Posible the league can happen.
If delayed further. No can do.

However, it seems prudent to consider for those showcasing, summer travel is much more important. Stay safe and salvage summer maybe smarter.

Honest question here, what about PGF? Are literally 100's of teams going to fly to California and stay in hotels as this virus (hopefully) is finishing up? Seems like there's no way in heck the tournament can take place, but when do you think they'd make a decision?

Also, how will qualifying work with most of the qualifying tournaments cancelled. This is a conundrum for sure

If they have it, and I have my doubts, they will likely just play with whoever has qualified so far and the invites.

No easy answers, we all have our own levels of what is acceptable risk, how much this should affect all aspects of daily life, and at what point do we say that's good enough. I hope circumstances can be taken in consideration for what activities have less risk than others. For instance, basketball tournaments were among the first casualties of the virus. They would have had thousands of people elbow to elbow, high five-ing, cheering and hugging in one space. Compare to a travel softball tournament with only dozens of people watching with lots of space to spread out, and everyone better educated on spacing and hand/face cleanliness. I'd feel less at risk there than at a grocery store. At some point school has to resume, basketball has to resume, softball tournaments have to resume and it will happen without 100% eradication.

School has to resume but not in its current form. Where I live they are already talking about eLearning the rest of this year and addressing the possibility of it carrying into next year.

Sports at the end of the day are just entertainment and not mandatory for education. Perhaps travel sports will fill the void. It will be interesting.

Agreed which puts us a year away based on estimates that I saw. I would like to see the betting odds for kids going back to school this year OR next year based on the current math.

Expect that the start to return to normal comes when the supply of adequate medical supplies (primarily ventilators, protective gear, testing supplies and ICU beds) coincides with dropping positive test rates. When we reach that point, you are at a tipping point where you can start to ease restrictions. How long this takes? Well, a lot of that depends on people's behavior and some luck.

Once you reach this point, you have bought time for research to find or develop an effective treatment (fairly likely within 6-9 months) which may or not include a vaccine or a cure at a much later date (less likely or possibly less needed if the treatment works in the majority of serious cases - and 12-24 months out).

The end result is not exactly how we handle flu and flu mutations without going through what we are going through now, but conceptually it is close enough. It is unlikely that we will eradicate or get new cases down to zero, but we will be able to manage the caseload and over time get better at treatment.

I doubt it will be a decision left to PGF. If you have no way to get there, no where to stay, and nowhere to play you do not have a tournament.
