Nicknames, for some reason its easier for my brain to remember nicknames of players.
Word association perhaps,
FUN makes it stick!

Here's a couple fun little stories-
At a travel ball tryouts there was a player who had a bright greenish headband on and I started calling her
"Tennis ball" She ended up being a starting outfielder at Arizona. Jenna Keen.
At a catching clinic ,
was talking about nicknames with the girls and asking if any had one. A catcher asked how do you get a nickname?
I replied, its something that reflects part of who you are. Then one girl throws her hand up and said "I like bacon"
Hence became the nickname "Bacon".
Which i heard several years later at a tourny. It was her :)

My nickname "Turbo"
Reflects my energy on the field!

HOW ABOUT YOURS?

Had a girl who was on the smaller side. She was strong and pretty quick. I called her "Beast." She loved it and would growl at me when I told her to show me the beast.

Had another one who was named "Goose." It was easier than trying to pronounce her 27 letter last name that started with a G.

We have played with girls nicknamed Rowdy and Termite. Recently my DD picked up the nickname "Wizard" as she is a huge Harry Potter fan. Coaches have come up with nicknames for all the girls but this one seems like the only one that gets used regularly. I'm digging it so far.

This one's a chuckle...
Had a new student name Elaina.
Asked if she had a nickname?
She kinda got a funny look on her face.
Her dad said Tell CoachTurbo what your teammates call you.

She replied
"Complaina"
....we worked on that ;)

I never really had one but my college manager used to call me Tourette because I guess he thought making light of a serious neurodevelopmental disorder was funny (no I don't have Tourette but was prone to "outbursts"...)

When my kid was 10 or so she picked up the nickname Ethel. That made no sense unless you met Lucy. But it worked out because if you met one, you always met the other. And if you saw them working together, you understood why we called them that.

Mine was/is Tip or Tippy. My Dds was Tippy or Lefty, my son was Tippy For a while. Basically if you have our last name you get called Tippy.

My DD's first name starts with T, she was called T for a time until the girls started calling her T-Bone, so that's what it is now... You can't give yourself a nickname, one has to be given to you.

I'll throw an older one out there...it still comes up every now and then when a certain type of motivation needs to be applied. One DD was often called "wheels" based on her speed and which of course, is a fairly common nickname. Our HS softball field attracts a lot of wildlife (elk, deer, coyotes, fox, we've had bear drag and leave carcasses there) but the Canadian geese that head south for the winter are particularly problematic in the fall, which is our school season out here. So, apparently near the beginning of a practice her freshman season DD made a nice sliding catch in the OF that resulted in a pretty colorful, stinky and well placed "poop stain" on her white practice pants. The others (coach included) had plenty of time that day to watch and think up the nickname that would remain for that season and even be celebrated at that season's awards banquet. Calling her "PS Wheels" will still cause a blush!

DD’s club coach called her Big Murph and it’s carried on into college.
mind you, Big Murph is all of 5’5” and 120 lbs if that.
It’s funny to watch the other team when her team is yelling “Go Big Murph” and there age is, nothing big about her.
