DD was supposed to student teach in Spain. Was going to leave tomorrow. In a gut wrenching decision she decided to stay in the U.S.

The cases there had been slowly increasing but it really took off within the past few days. Just tonight they closed all the schools in Madrid, she was supposed to be 50 or so miles from there so she very well would not have been able to student teach.

I have been following this pretty closely. I’m afraid its going to take off here too. I personally think there are a lot of undiagnosed cases out there.

I’m going to guess that the recent ramp up is heavily due to test kits become available. Prior to widespread testing, only the more serious cases were diagnosed. I expect when the testing becomes more thorough, the case numbers will skyrocket, and the mortality rate will drop considerably to fall in line with the numbers from South Korea.

It is also believed that warmer weather will slow the spread of the virus down considerably. Summer is coming up fast. I think (hope) there will be a lot of people out there that feel pretty silly that they can’t fit their car in the garage because they freaked out and bought Costco out of toilet paper.

Many (most?) colleges and universities in Ohio announced they are following the governor's recommendations re: in-person instruction and on-campus living. My daughter's school is finishing up this week per normal, then have spring break next week after which they will do online instruction for at least 2 more weeks. All students without explicit permission must be out of the dorms by Monday and expect to stay out until early April. Extent of impact on Spring sports is still TBD, but her spring break trip has been cancelled. The news changes daily, so I don't expect current measures to be the end of it.

I fully expected even more drama. When we get 3 inches of snow in Philly the media creates mass hysteria. I wasn't a big believer in comparing this to the Flu but its starting to make more sense now.

Westwind! Smart move and so glad to hear your DD didn't go. Obviously young and healthy but the thought of a DD over there with it getting worse, maybe not to get home, etc. etc. was a smart move. Who knows will this will go. Nobody knows and that is the problem IMHO. We just don't know so don't risk it. Happy to hear the decision yall made and hope she can do it again in a less uncertain time.
It was a tough call- she and and one of her close friends who is already in Spain (got there in January) were going to travel and hostel their way through Switzerland and Italy so they were going to make the most of their free time.

A lot of it came down to getting in her student teaching which is required to graduate. She already has a teaching job in another state so she needs to finish up. When Italy started shutting down school, that was the writing on the wall. She decided that if she went and eventually got sent home, there is probably no school district around that would let her in the doors. (Also, student teaching is apparently a lot of work for the teacher and school district that oversees the student teacher.)

She got back most of the money from the student teaching program and the airline let her reschedule her ticket as long as she does it by the end of the year.

I agree with all this. The longer we can put this off, the closer we get to summer the better. And just like you say, the numbers will go up as we figure out how to test for it better.

DD#2 is starting her last hs softball season. To me, if we have the worst case scenario of online classes, (our school district is possibly ready for this, we are an “everyone has an iPad” school district) I hope we can still do outdoor sports.

The only thing I don’t agree with is the thing about Costco! I love Costco but everybody knows you buy toilet paper at Menards, not Costco, lol!

We will be fine no matter what happens. Nobody does “crisis” like the U.S. We like to take shots at each other but big picture no country in the world is better prepared than us. I was in a grocery store yesterday. They had all their cleaning supplies, hand soap and rubbing alcohol stacked up on the end caps, prices marked down and the only thing they were out of was hand sanitizer. They filled that shelf space with hand soap so it didn’t look empty. I was impressed, there are some nervous people out there and the worst thing they can see is high prices and empty shelves. Thought the store is doing a great job countering that.

In MA tons of colleges have cancelled their spring SB trips to Florida. I know of at least 7 colleges that have canceled.

DD1 found out her school is not going, no word on classes or the remainder of the SB season.

DS college has last on campus classes this week then they are off for a week (already had spring break so this is extra) and then online classes to end of term.

DD2 has break from private high school but they are talking about canceling spring sports and doing online classes. No SB would kill her.

I am wondering what will happen to all these summer tournaments as DD2 is a junior. Bad timing.

Infants and 80 YO do attend softball games though..

And people who attend softball games often have contact with infants and 80 year olds.

I don't think there's widespread panic about people getting infected and dying from these venues. I think the reaction is to keep it from spreading to those populations quickly, because if it does we don't (nor does any country) have the healthcare resources to deal with it.

Here in Colorado we've got a state of emergency declared with all school-sponsored travel cancelled. But nothing from the softball leagues yet. My wife and kids sons had a planned trip to Disney World in 10 days; my daughter was headed to Peru on a school trip. Now it looks like everyone's going to be staying home with me, greatly interfering with my basketball watching over Spring Break.
