And if you are the umpire you can make that call.
So a hug is assisting the runner? That is what the umpire has to determine and yes it is a judgement call but any umpire who makes that call is taking him or herself too seriously and any coach who tries to get that call made is an arse. I don't care if you show me 2000 examples of the call being made. Hugging a runner rounding third after an over the fence HR gives absolutely zero advantage to the offense...

When coach daddy's little princess on the team always has to drag a large speaker to warm-ups (pulled in a wagon by daddy) so she can have her C-R-A-P tunes blaring out. Makes it impossible to communicate with anyone during warm-ups.
Similar situation with pre-game at HS games. Why is it always the deaf person in charge of running the sound system?

Her own teammates cannot carry her. The opposing team can though. Nor should they enter the field of play and Run with her.

No it’s not recommended a coach hug a player during her home run trot. But it’s not
Assisting and is not an out.
We are being told that in D1 players are being warned to stay out of fair ball territory when the homerun hitter comes home. And we are talking High School, which the alphabet orgs tend to follow.

And No
Rule 8 Batter-Runner and Runner
Section 6 The runner is out
Art 5 Any offensive team member, other than another runner, physically assists the runner
Penalty The ball is in play and runner is out.
First off, can we all agree that a over the fence home run is a dead ball?....It's not live, so it's dead. Now, USA Rule 8-Section 7 (The Runner is Out)-E states: "When any offensive team member, other than another runner, physically assists a runner while the ball is LIVE"
For example, a girl hits a HR who never hit one, the whole team is so excited they rush out onto the field and carry her around the bases (BR touching each one) all the way home. That is legal, there is no rule against it. As an umpire, I wouldn't rule anything on it, maybe warn the coach not to allow that to happen again.

I just came back from umpire class, I ran this scenario by the Rules interpreter for our high school section, he's the top guy. This is the way he explained it to me, a HR is a dead ball, this is allowed. Remember, I'm talking USA softball here. I like to hear what TMIB or Marriad or any other long time ump says about this.

12u players who ask me what the score is/are we winning/did we win is probably 1 through 9 on my list. Number 10 is 12u players who cry and whine about it being cold (in particular when it's above 40 degrees), and have their hands jammed in their pockets/inside their sleeves.
Last week at practice had about 3-4 girls complaining of the heat. It's NEVER hot here, and on that day, it topped off at a whopping 68 degrees! They equate breaking a sweat from ever so slightly going above jogging pace to being in a heat wave!

Delayed dead ball, once BR touches home plate. Runners cannot advance on a dead ball.

Edit: Nope. Just dead ball. Did find a note that the umpire could not return a ball into play until the pitcher was on the plate and all defensive players were in fair territory. Still would like to understand what the exact ruling was in the Alabama game. I saw that happen live that day, and they were being sloppy!

Assisting is the determination of the Umpire, and is not something you can appeal. So if you are the umpire you can make that determination, or you can roll the dice.
That’s why I said it’s not recommended. Because some jackass ump out there who doesn’t understand why the rules are written the way they are will call someone out who wasn’t actually assisted.

Just like umps who don’t understand the look back rule or the infield fly rule or any other MSU application of rules we see.

1. when the HS coach puts girl with cannon arm at 3b. for 4 years. never failed to have a case of the "where the heck is that throw going?" when the game was on the line. 5,6,7 great plays in a row, then BOOM throwing error. Girl should have been installed in Outfield with that cannon on day 1.

#2 Lack of EFFORT. it takes no skill or talent to hustle!

#3 Could be a long list, lets just say i'm glad DD is in college and done with HS ball.

This is a quality thread. Here are my three biggest ones -

1. Runner on third with less than two outs not tagging up on a fly ball only seconds after the 3B coach told them to tag up on a fly ball.

2. Runners on 1st and 2nd or bases loaded and a hard ground ball hit back to P. P fields it cleanly and immediately throws to first.

3. Catchers back picking runners that they have absolutely no chance to pick off when facing the bottom of the line up in a close game.

Catchers who pull strikes out of the strike zone before blue can make a call. Worried about the girl on first who runs like she has a piano on her back.
