1.) Fun 2.) At 14u+ because a college coach will be at a certain event and your team isn't.

Well if you play at the higher levels you just can't go and play for whomever because you are sanctioned with your primary team. Coaches don't own the players but they do own their rights (they have to be released from a sanctioned team) . If it's a showcase tournament then it's no issue obviously.
This is a good point.
Roster rules. Pertaining to certain sb venues. These can apply at all ages.

It can also work when say.....
(*this was 2019)
Current team NOT attending certain venues like PGF qualifiers. And hasnt.
So you as a player ARE eligible to participate with another team that is!
That includes being a pick up player on an attending PGF already qualified team roster by a certain date for nationals.
(*always check sb venue for current rules pertaining)

.....Then of course
Friendlies anything goes!

I have seen a lot of 12u teams in our area pick up EXTRA pitchers almost every weekend, only to sit their paying players (not just resting pitchers, but doing that too). Why? So they can win tournaments.

It is everything that is wrong with youth sports. Win, win, win at all costs. At 12u. IMHO - If your team isn't playing enough for you, find a team that is, and move on. The parents that push their kids to play every weekend for different teams, TEND to burn them out or get them injured.

Why don't colleges allow teams to pick up players? Why doesn't every girl just play for whatever team every weekend?

If there truly aren't enough girls to play, a pick up may be ok. But not to sit existing players. My kid has not been directly affected by this, but it sucks to see it.

There are good reasons to discourage guest/pickup. There are good reasons to allow it. But whatever the reason, the policy has to be communicated to everyone on the team upfront.

because you have to be enrolled at the school and in good academic standing ;) pretty much you cannot "guest" in HS. this is why colleges and HS generally carry significantly larger rosters than TB.

agreed with most of the post though. guest players should not be brought in to win tournaments, but only when team needs players (exception to numbers rule might be if team loses a couple of Ps to injury, might have numbers perse, but not enough pitching to get through weekend). and needing players does not mean you are at 9, more like 10.

If your dd plays travel ball why on earth would she play rec ball? All that is going to do is mess her timing and rhythm up. After all you left rec ball because dd's skills were beyond that level why go back to it? All I am trying to say is why take the chance when the team you sub for means nothing to you

rec team DD played on did not mean nothing to her, she wanted to play with friends from school, and also frankly DD wanted to shut up some girls in school, who play in a "travel league" that is glorified rec ball (really just rec ball without drafts, geographic constraints, or playing time rules of rec ball, basically snob rec ball, they still have run limits, points in standings for a loss, etc.). when DD would try to talk to them about the tournaments she played in, because no one else in school plays at that level, they dismissed whatever she said because they have no idea what she is talking about. rec ball also taught her better patience in the box, CUs were killing her in TB.

lots of other reasons too. maybe a girl is a developing P, not getting circle time on her TB team, local rec teams are dying for pitching so she will get plenty of circle time. maybe she wants to work on slapping but travel coach wont let her yet, not quite there. maybe she splits time on her travel team and simply wants more reps.

as for GP on another TB team, maybe she has friends on the team. maybe it will give her a chance to play a position she wants to play but has someone ahead of her on depth chart on her team.

We play every other weekend for a couple months now, plus a double header league every thursday. We have a policy that if you want to pick up, ask the coach. I'm not against girls picking up, but I will talk to them about burn out. It can be a lot when you add in practice and all of the games. So I give them a strong warning about playing to much. Then let them do what they want.

Parent and player decision. No input from coach needed. Why should a coach get input on my dd’s time outside of scheduled practices and games? It’s her life, not yours.

exactly, what's next, skateboarding or mountain biking ban?
