Take her to a field and work with her on your own. That should be a given regardless of what age/level a kid is playing at. Don't rely on coaches or the team you are playing with to make your kid better. Take matters into your own hands.

How true! Great Post Pattar!

I disagree about the getting better in games statement. The skills come in practice, but they get better at the game, by playing the game. 8U is glorified practice. An example I can think of regarding getting better in games vs practice, last year my DD played rec basketball. In the half dozen or so practices the girls worked on dribbling, shooting, passing, etc. Huge improvements in a short time with a group that had little to no BB experience. First game of the season they get on the court and they literally had no idea how to play the game. None. They got beat 55-4 even with the tallest girl on the court by a good 8". The girls get a few games under their belt and play the same team again and they lose 26-18.

My point is, understanding the game is just as, or more important to being a good player than the individual skills. The best place to get the understanding is in games.

Page, as far as your DD not always making the right play, that's fine. She shouldn't always make the right play. When I asked if she could make the plays I meant, can she make the throw from 3rd to 1st. I mean her best throw. If the answer is yes, I'd lean toward moving up. THe throw she can make 1 in 10 now, she'll make 8 in 10 in June.

Yes I agree, I feel like if she’s lacking in anything it’s the understanding of the game... like when to do what. She’s got hitting, grounders throwing down pretty well but mentally hesitates sometimes about what to do with the ball (as most of them do). Last year she could make the throw from 3rd to 1st... almost lol. I’m hoping she’s gotten a little stronger and would be able to this year but not sure.

Oh we practice every evening in spring and summer... she makes us lol. She has a pitch back and we live in a rural area so we play mock games etc. She also takes private lessons a few months out of the year.

That will come with experience. At the younger ages, I'll take a kid with Omar Vizquel glove skills but a lack of game awareness over Casey Stengel Sue who knows where to throw it but cannot catch it to be able to make the correct play 10 out 10 times...;)

Yup. At 10U no one can/should complain if they're getting outs at first base. Field IQ will take a bit.

Now if the weather around here during the week would cooperate I could get onto a field and practice what I preach. Getting sick of hitting Marcela grounders indoors on turf..

Wish I had the turf, I'm stuck with just hitting balls off the tee in the house to the net LOL
