A player involved in an electronic cheating scandal came forward to help expose the bad actors. Regardless of what anyone thinks about sign stealing using electronic devices, it's against the rules of the game. Jessica Mendoza is certainly allowed to feel whatever she wants about the sanctity of the locker room, but her position speaks to a serious character flaw.

We all have different values and belief systems, but it's never the wrong time to do the right thing. Call him out for participating in and benefiting from cheating, but Mike Fiers is not the bad guy for revealing his own role in the malfeasance.

Is the sanctity of the locker room more important than the integrity of the game?

Her comments sound like something someone would say if they've cheated or known about others cheating in the past and never said anything.

The people committing the violation are threatening the integrity of the game, not the other way around.

She's a Mets employee and the new Mets manager was involved in the cheating scandal.

She's always had a conflict of interest since taking that Mets job, and it's becoming obvious to everybody now.

Work for ESPN or work for a team. You cannot do both without stuff like this happening.

EDIT: About a minute after I posted this, Ken Rosenthal reported that Beltran was stepping down. I wonder if Mendoza's opinion will change now.

I wonder if Mike Fiers will give back his World Series ring and cash since he benefited while on the Astros.

Second, he's not a whistleblower. If he was a whistleblower he'd have done it while WITH the the Astros, not when he's on a rival team.

I wouldn't advise holding your breath while waiting for that to happen. ;)

Make that former Mets manager. Beltran is out.

Slightly tangential to the OP but anyone thinking that Mike Fiers is some hero in this is being naive. This is a guy who not only didn't come forward while benefiting from the cheating, but threw a questionable no-hitter (against the Dodgers, coincidentally) based on possible pine tar (or some other substance).

What baseball people choose to get outraged over baffles me. I LOVE baseball, but when I heard about this, all I thought was "I'm surprised it took this long for someone to get caught". From spitballs to corked bats to stealing signs, there is a certain amount of cheating that is part of baseball's legacy. Even MLB isn't above "tweaking" the game to their advantage when it suits them (hot/dead balls). It's crazy to me that people seem to be so scandalized by this. They got busted, they were punished, and every team in MLB (including the Astros, Red Sox, and Mets) will continue to try stealing signs. This didn't threaten the integrity of the game, it just threatened the pedestal that some people put the game on.

Personally, I think the use of technology is more of the threat part. Of course, everyone wants to use as many tools as they can to gain an advantage but when you start using more and more instead of a persons observation skills, this is when the integrity part comes in.

I'll probably get blasted but this all seems much ado about nothing. The game is played on front of the public and I'm guess this has been going on forever, except now instead of a guy in the outfield with binoculars we are much more sophisticated because of technology. To be a complete purist I guess only the players and coaches on the field should be allowed to steal signs but I'm just not feeling it....maybe we need to get these catchers and pitchers some wristbands so they can't steal signs you could randomly rotate cards each inning so there wouldn't be a pattern that will fix it ;)
