Back pick's YES! or no?

Catcher playing catch
with the infield and a tag!
Trust your defense!

Relieves pressure
Gets an out
Takes away scoring possibility
Controls the game
Let's go hit!

Does your team use this
game dominating strategy?!

Who's confident, who's not....
Why?

LET'S THROW RUNNERS OUT!!!

Are you talking throwing behind a runner? IE....runner gets a lead at first and the catcher throws to the 1st baseman.

Yes. Back picks can be to any base.

I'm a big believer in catchers being aggressive with their throwing. Show off that arm. Keep runners cautious. Even attempts that don't produce an out may keep a runner slightly closer to the base on the next pitch. In a game often determined by close calls, every bit can make a big difference.

Not a fan slinging the ball around without a real chance to get the out just to hold runners tight. This keeps a catcher from getting opportunities at outs. The only thing worse IMO is the repetitive pump fakes. Catcher needs to lull BRs to sleep and then strike. Teach your catchers to watch BRs tendencies. Always watch out of the corner of your eye. Never let them know you’re watching. Catch them with their eyes down, looking at base coach, or taking an extra step.

The opportunity that presents itself the most is picking a trailing runner. They will tend to take a bigger lead thinking catcher won’t throw behind the lead runner. As we’ve discussed, picking dirt pitches is another good opportunity at back picks.

trying so hard to get DD to do this. no pump fakes, no nothing. coach wants her to do it as well. I told her 1st base runner of the game, 1 and maybe 2nd pitch (assuming no contact by batter, no PB/WP, etc.), do nothing, just watch out of corner of eye. if they are taking big lead, not paying attention a lot, etc., next pitch, fire as soon as she receives it, no look almost (trust 1B to be in position).

As much as you all are working on picks, 1B needs to be apart of it and work on slap tags. The more they work this, the more comfortable the throw will be. Another related tip is if the delay is on, the catcher must scream “going” to 1B. Catcher is the first to see it and 1B can then catch, pivot and throw instead of laying a tag on an empty base.

Create attack mode.
Mentally need to know it is a responsibilty of the catching position. Communicate to infield befor game to Create the mental readiness and set mental attitude.
Once a batter gets on first.
Mandatory throw it next pitch.
Repeat
Repeat
Repeat

Heck if anything start at friendlies.
(What are friendlies for if not to work on game strategy.)

Green light is on!
Throw! & Grow!

Good point jdaddy
Imo
Add 2nd base & ss yell going.
Especially since one of those need to cover 2nd base. Should be paying attention specifically to that.
Of course catcher can also but usually it happens when catcher is in act of throwing.

Totally depends on the game situation. Saw a school ball team a couple of years ago lose two games when the catcher attempted to back pick a runner at 3B and threw the ball into LF. In neither situation was the runner taking a particularly aggressive lead and in both situations, the team had two outs.

I agree with Jdaddy that back picking a trail runner is often extremely effective.
