Short & sweet, my DD (10U, 7/2010 DOB) wants to pitch. The first PC I took her to didn’t “teach any certain style” and I didn’t know any better so she trained with him for 3 months. Enter a new PC whose DD was quite the pitcher in her prime but using HE. This PC recognizes I/R as the supreme method, but sometimes I feel his years of HE experience spill over & that my DD is being taught a “blend.” I’ve read & re-read threads here & have started Rick Pauly’s new courses so that I can better understand her journey & educate myself when she’s being instructed to do something that maybe isn’t I/R. She & I are going to get back to the very basics. I welcome all feedback & appreciate your help along the way. I’m a Mom on mission with a wildly dedicated little girl!

Here, Jo is practicing Pauly’s “Dot & Cover” where she makes contact/brush with the “dot” near her elbow & internally rotates to “cover” the line on her forearm. These cues are drawn on her arm with washable green marker...if you can see them. (These clips were slow-motion...I’ll need to research why that isn’t preserved when I uploaded them! )

Questions....

1.) Is this whip? Is she doing it correctly? If not, what can be improved?
2.) I’m zip code 45053 in rural SW Ohio, near Indiana. Do you know of a PC teaching I/R near me?

Thank you, friends!

Best of luck on her journey! She’s off to a good start.

Get used to saying “Circle”. There’s no mound in softball.

She is on the right path. Kudos to you for taking the time and effort to learn how to teach her.
Be patient. The early stages of becoming a pitcher are exciting but also frustrating.

As far as her videos, I can't say she's doing anything wrong. The whip looks good.

I can't really help you with a PC in your area, but honestly, you may get by with what you're doing right now and just taking the time to sit on a bucket and catch for her.

You may want to just have her pitch into a net for now and focus solely on mechanics.

As far as drills, that I personally can recommend. I used the "lock it in" and "show it" drill that is posted in the pitching section. The key to true IR, for us is palm UP and lead with the pinky. Making sure she leads with the pinky will allow her to ensure her palm stays up through the arm circle.

Go slow, and be patient. It won't happen quickly.. but it will happen :)

I like to start with reverse throws stopping at palm up and arm more of 135 degree. Begin with hand at release then backward chaining. Her arm has too much bend unless she is at 12 o clock position, hard to tell from video angle. I like starting at release position then flowing back into 9 o'clock then back to release. Then progress higher, start at release position backwards to 12 o'clock then down to throw. Movement seems better than still starts.

Missing dot and cover here.

To start, I’d suggest unlocking the legs—especially the back leg. Allow the back foot to roll up onto the toe which will help her a ton with posture and put the hip in the perfect spot to receive the inside of the elbow.

FWIW, I'll be in Indy Feb 1-2 for a clinic and some lessons. I know that's not the long term thing you're looking for but if you came, you'd be welcome to bring your PC as my personal guest so they can perhaps see where the HE stuff is coming into play with the instruction. If she was as good as you say, then she was probably already doing it and not doing HE stuff when she pitched... now she just has to learn to teach it.
