Unless they're adults, call them girls.

1. Woman is fact, lady is opinion.
2. For school mascots, it is absolutely wrong to call the female teams "Lady" whatevers. It's discriminatory. It says that the boys have the right to the team name and are the 'normal' ones, where as the girls are "others" and inferior to the standard. We've hashed through all that here before.
3. It sexualizes girls to call them ladies. Epstein didn't rape underage women, he raped girls.

I only had one coach in my life call us "gents". He was born in 1920.

In fairness, he also called us "mung" which he described as the stuff underneath the scum at the bottom of a pond. So...

I disagree that calling a softball team "ladies" is sexuallizing them.
As far as "lady Whatevers" goes, to me it's simply a shorter way to differentiate between the boys and girls teams. It may not be necessary in softball because it's not a sport played by both sexes, but I understand the reasoning in sports played by both, like basketball.
And I don't see how calling them ladies has any bearing on the fact that Epstein didn't kill himself.

The vast majority of my DD's coaches (she's 11 and has been playing multiple sports since she was 5) have used the team name when addressing the group. "Come on, Purple Unicorns, it's time to get warmed up!" or "Storm, grab your gear and meet me under that tree."

When talking about them, I think coaches and parents use "girls" more often but they're still children so that's the logical way to refer to them IMO.

Talking to someone "The girls played really well today". Talking to the team "You played great today ladies!"
I communicate the same way about boys. "The boys played really well today" vs "You played great today gentlemen!"
I'm also thinking 13 yoa and above.

I think either is fine provided you don't mix and match depending on the situation. If you always call them ladies after then win and girls when they lose ,etc it can be an issue. Honestly once they hit 14 they stop listening anyway:)

Saying "ladies" was habit for me. My dad when he coached us (softball), my mom the same (volleyball & basketball).

Team name is a good way to avoid the (mild) controversy, I always used team name or girls knowing full well when I coached baseball I always used team name or boys. Never used ladies or gentlemen, I figured the only diamonds here are dirt. No need for tiaras and cumber bunds.

From I have seen, with some kids you could call them donkeys and unless you did it via snapchat or posted a tik tok video of you doing it wouldn't really matter

If you see and treat your players with genuine respect, whatever you call them is likely to be spoken and heard with respect. No need to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

As for "Lady" in front of a team name? It's never been a big deal for me either way. One nearby high school is called the "Lady Bulldogs," which I can't help but find amusing. Not really any way to get that one right!
