Here's what I did when I had a situation where an entire 10U team was new. I placed the numbers 1-12 in a hat. Each girl picked a number from the hat and were not allowed to open the number until everyone had picked. The 1-12 was the section order. The girl with #1 was the first girl to choose the number she wanted. #12 was the last one to pick the number she wanted. In the end it all worked out. The kids worked the numbers out on their own without any parental input and everyone was happy.

Another solution if you they are looking for a single digit number is one can be 7 and the other be 07. Both numbers are allowable under most alphabets.

First one who guesses the closest prime number to the desired number wins.

More like the first one who can tell you what a prime number even is.

One player starts on third base. The other starts on first base. Drop the jersey on the pitcher’s plate. Death match begins ... winner gets the jersey.

Tell them it’s just like Hunger Games (which Suzanne Collins ripped off Battle Royale ... but hey, I digress).

Hello all. I'm a coach looking for some advice. Starting a new travel team and two girls are requesting the same jersey number. Both are same age and they both have played with the number since start of rec league.

How would you handle this?

I'm thinking the fairest solution is just asking BOTH girls to pick a new number, but I wanted to hear feedback from what other coaches have done in these situations. Any creative ideas on how to handle this fairly and without issues?
How about a hitting contest. Get a tee give them each 3 swings and best ball wins.

flip a coin, hi/lo

funny enough, I had same situation without the history behind it in coach pitch my first year coaching. Did not notice it though, nor did equipment manager for league when I turned in my uniform sheet (he compiles them all, assigns sponsors, and sends order in for jerseys). so we had two with same number for that year, but in coach pitch I do not think anyone cared (they were just glad to have a coach, I had 16 girls that year)

I've always found rock, paper, scissors best two out of three is a good solution. Isn't quite as arbitrary as a coin toss and certainly not as much fun as a hunger games style battle. Rolling a ball towards pitchers mound is a lot like pitching nickels (might be showing my age). The hitting contest invites parents to quibble about the height of the tee, the type of tee, and the fact that there's a gentle breeze blowing in from center.

In closing I wish you the best of luck with this decision. I'm willing to bet that one of the girls (read her parents) are more attached to this number than the other so I hope you find some wiggle room.
