10u is way too early, regardless of level, to tell them they can only play one sport (ask your child's pediatrician or Orthopaedic). kudos to the coaches who make it work.

Mike trout talks about how he played two sports into HS, and how it helped him. If the kid is athletic enough, they will be fine, don't listen to those that talk about falling behind. year round focused training can only take a player so far, the athleticism has to be there as well. and playing other sports is also less likely to result in overuse injuries or burnout.

let her be a 10yo girl.

and btw, it is fine to tryout even if you do not think you can commit to team, the time to talk about that is after they extend an offer. see what they say. but be certain to be honest about what their other sport entails schedule wise at the beginning.

Tryouts are fine and as long as if you join a team being COMPLETELY upfront and honest with them so everyone knows what they are getting into then it's all good.

I'm with @bmakj at 10 I'm not 100% sold on gotta be committed to being a super A player softball only 24/7. If you are training to be an Olympic Level athelte this is a true statement if you are in the other 99.9% at 10 feel free to try out different things and find what you like. If the A teams in the area won't allow that then join a B team that's local and doesn't travel as much.

Luckily my DD's other sports (school basketball and track) don't get in the way of softball and even if they do, my DD knows softball comes first. Plus her coach knows she plays multiple sports. The only time basketball or track has trumped softball was last year when the coach called a last minute practice and she missed it for her last track meet of the year. Her coaches have been nothing but supportive, and her softball coach says her running track means she can steal more bases :ROFLMAO:

Definitely try out.

But if you get an offer, then be 100% honest with coaches, your DD and yourself. Pretty hard to do both sports at the highest levels.

Only thing that woories me is some of these 10U A teams...aren't really at "the highest level" depending on your area; they are better than rec but a lot of times that's about all you can say

To update everyone. It is a true A level team in the SF Bay Area. We did end up going to the tryout immediately after my DD said she didn’t like it and not meaning she didn’t feel good about her performance. They told us within 48 hrs we would know. I was not expecting her to make the team once I saw the other talent but were informed via text she did not make the team which is if you ask me is the easy way out. So I asked for a call to see what they felt were the areas to focus on and I got a text with a very “canned” response as if it was copied and pasted. She wasn’t upset about not making it but even at 9 she said why didn’t they call to go over things.

On Sunday we had a tryout for the second team originally mentioned which is more along the lines of a B team. The coach was great totally understands multi sports and his Fall program is set a bit looser for that reason and for girls like my DD to be able to hit a practice or game here or there to develop. I asked my DD her thoughts on that tryout and she enjoyed it a lot more because they were more encouraging of all the players. Several hours later coach called me and informed me she made the team and asked what the soccer schedule looked like so he could see about trying to work that into the plan some how.

Needless to say it was all good experience for my DD and me.

Nice. Sounds like a good fit.

As far as not making the team, many top teams go with a "if you don't hear from us, you didn't make it" approach. Seems quite cold but that's how they do it.

Good to know, this is her first year able to play 10u which has more options so it this process is a bit new for us. Before she played 2 years of 8u travel but there is only 1 organization in our area that offered 8u.

If you don’t hear from us is how the second coach left it which was weird to process but we received a phone call and an email. Now my concern is that organization is good but small and doesn’t look like they have enough to field a full team nor does it look like it has a dedicated 10u coach. He hasn’t given me much info on his thought for spring but needless to say I didn’t know this until the last day or so.
