About half of our TB team wants to pick up some extra play in rec this fall. They want to play up in 14u (they are currently 12u), but the league won't allow them to play up. Playing 12u rec does not appeal to them, so they will pass. And that is why rec is dying.

I'm not sure rec is dying because 5 or 6 girls aren't playing. I could be wrong.

They should join the league as players and get drafted. A 12U TB team against a 14U rec team is a mismatch. Join and get players split up so you can at least have some good games.

Our county rec program doesn't have any restriction that I'm aware of. I know travel ball players who did play rec, usually up an age group, for extra pitching or catching time. But our county's program is pretty weak. When DD was a new 10U pitcher, she was already too good to get much out of playing even 12U rec. I know some counties have strong rec programs but ours really does not.

The only rule we have regarding travel and rec is that travel players are not eligible to play on the rec all star teams in the spring.

The travel coaches can put the rule in their team contract if they so desire. The other issue is conflicts. Girls will miss almost half the rec games if they also play Travel.

In my previous post I may not have mentioned it ... I was against the idea but my Board won out. This is a primary reason I was against it. It is not fair to the rest of the team when their primary obligation is a side-habit for the travel player.

I can understand a girl wanting to come back to play with her neighborhood friends, but I think doing it in that manner is a purely selfish decision. I want extra playing time, not I’m contributing to a team.

I know most users on this site are involved in travel ball, rather than rec leagues, but if you know the rules of your rec league, please respond.

The reason I ask is because my DD plays outfield on a select team, but wants to pitch. I signed her up for the local rec league, but was told she’s ineligible to pitch because she plays select ball. Never mind the fact that she’s never even pitched batting practice on her select team, much less in a game. This seems absurd to me, but maybe it’s common practice?
Our daughter doesn't play rec for this reason - she is a pitcher! But if you play travel ball, you cannot pitch or catch on a rec team. Silly if you ask me!!

I can’t speak for all areas ... but the people I still stay in contact with from the local rec programs said they have seen a resurgence, particularly of 14u players, the last two years. Essentially, kids are getting burnt out on the demands of travel at 10u and 12u OR mom and dad are getting burnt out ... either way, they are coming back to play for 6-8 weeks in the summer at home with less stress and less cost.

We had issues like this with our rec league then just after I left the board they just implemented a select team under our banner. The select team was probably a good B level travel team and they wouldn't usually travel more than an hour to play tournaments...these were most of the girls that played all stars the year before. Now the issue was our rec all star team that would go to nationals each year (PONY) suffered and the true rec team all stars didn't make it past state.
