So DD switched to taper grip about 10 months ago because I wanted her to try it. She liked it so e kept them on both bats. One is the hard plastic type you tape over and the other is rubbery -hard to slip over type. She likes both, maybe rubbery one a little more.

So we are visiting family back east where we have gloves, bats and balls. The bat here doesn't have a taper and she hits good with it but says it hurts her lead hand and by the redness of her palm, I believe her. So I quickly remedied the problem with a homemade taper,

Who hits with taper? Have you ever tried going back to no taper? Is she doing something wrong mechanically to cause pain?

Personally when I played I had an old Louisville Slugger that came tapper I really like the feel.

As far as her hurting I could see her having to now adjust her grip and that causing some issue my guess is if she just kept at it for a while she would adjust just fine but the first few times she could be either squeezing way to hard or she could be using same grip and bat sliding in her hand, is she using a batting glove, that should hlep a little especially with any redness as long as its not worn?

She's doing nothing mechanically wrong. My DD uses Grip-n-Rip. No negatives to it's use.

Here is quite a bit of info on what you are asking about I think.

We did taper grip for a couple months, including a hockey tape “hollow tape taper” that I found on Softballfans.

We got away from it- I think dd’s hand just needed time with the taper to heal. It was fine when we were doing it.

I use to wear out my bottom hand batting glove in that same exact spot and it was from the knob.

DD burned though a lot of gloves wearing out that exact spot.
I also knew better to ask my father to buy me more than 1 pair of batting gloves a season so I just ended up with a callous there. Amazingly 20+ years later I can still the faint outline of where it was...

I just went back and reread that thread.

Man I miss FFS. He put a ton of info in that thread.

Before the days of the Dicks sporting goods replacement plan, lol!

My “playing career” was rec in the late 70’s/early 80’s. I don’t remember anyone having batting gloves. We were probably taking less than 50 swings a week though. Man I wish I could go back and do that over.
