I guess I should of included some school names. DD did not cast a wide net limiting her D3 search to baby Ivys, U Chicago types of schools.

There are some schools that do not offer money to anyone. Academic or Athletic. Ivy League is a great example of this.

Ivy's offer plenty of money if your family income does not reach their cut off level. This goes for athlete and non alike.

We did this three years ago. Here is what we learned. D3 has little money for anyone making something over 140k. DD had a 35 ACT and a 4.5 weighted GPA with 5's on all her AP tests but her 4 in Chem and still no D3 offered any academic money due to our income and yes she was recruited. Fall of her SR year the phone rang regularly from D3 coaches and admissions.
This is definitely school specific. DD is at a D3 that she was recruited for and received a decently large academic scholarship from the school based on grades and test scores. They tacked on a grandfathered tuition grant this year based on her grades freshman year.
She qualifies for next to nothing from FAFSA due to our income but it didn’t affect the academic money at all.

Her coach recruits fairly heavily and they are competitive in their conference but I agree with PPs that some players could easily play a higher level while others could not.

Edit- I totally missed this was 7 pages long and totally missed it was 8 years old. Ha. I will leave my original reply below. I need to play more attention.

I have to disagree with your assertion that D3 schools are not out there actively recruiting players. I have seen at least 10 D3 coaches at are our 16u tournament venues this summer. I saw them around the field - not all watching our team. I know several of the girls on our team were contacted by D3 coaches as sophomores.

I think long-time coaches can generally get a feel for who are D1, D2 and D3 talent and can look/act accordingly.

I don't know your financial position, but it's never too soon to start researching non-athletic scholarship funding options, even though she hasn't picked a school yet.

Once she selects her school, then she can compete for school-specific scholarships.

D3 coaches aren't out actively recruiting players. My friend said she selected the school and then let the coach know she was coming at which point she was invited to try out. Other situations may be similar or not.

All divisions d1, d2, d3, juco.....span the gamut from competitive, to awful.

There are fewer really competitive d2, d3 teams because best pitchers go to d1. Depending on where you go, may find the softball about like mediocre HS ball. Just dont be shocked. Check out level of play first, watch some games. Just like travel ball...... If you don't have a good pitcher you don't have a team. Good d2,d3,juco teams are teams that have a D1 pitcher that got passed over. If the team does well ,she may not stay passed over she may be recruited by a big d-1 school the next yr.

Many coaches allow walk ons to make team. But also honor commitments to their recruited players. My DDs team had one walkon that played, several that sat bench . That walkon that played csme to school to play basketball, but ended up switching to softball. Was all- conference, etc.
