While I have no idea if we'll be asked to coach, I and my DD signed up to be coach/asst coach for 3 local rec leagues this spring season. She needs volunteering hours and that will count. We went and watched some local rec league baseball kids practice in the fall and she missed it so much, just having fun and not worried about performance, college, etc etc. She said she wished she could do it again and I said we could always volunteer to coach. One league had us fill out the forms and get the background checks. We signed up for anything coach pitch and above, softball and baseball. Since she's 16u her season doesn't start till after HS season is over, so no real conflicts since she doesn't play HS. Kinda hoping we get a team. I'd love to coach again with my DD by my side. Brings on a next level feel after spending so many years coaching her. Gotta love it!

Have read your posts for years here. Your team will be beyond lucky to have you!!!

Well, DD said that I could sign GDD up for spring softball. So, I am head coach. I put her down as catcher. She said should "I try to hit the bat with the ball?" Umm. No.

Oh, and I will be 65 tomorrow.

Wow I have been on this board so long I remember when she was a baby!! This is so cool and nice to see you back Amy!

There is a dead beat dad, that is behind $18,000 in child support, so my daughter works 60 hours a week.
I am not certain she knows how to coach or is interested. I can ask her to throw batting practice, I guess. Softball is my thing, anyway.

So sad that I am not the only one with that problem.

I just got a 10u softball team. My only qualifications are watching 10 years of travel baseball and a lot of patience....I hope it's enough. Any advice would be great!

It can be! My best advice...be humble and willing to educate yourself. There's A TON of great info on this site. Ask for help...there's an abundance of experience and help here. 10U is awesome! You can have a lot of fun and teach the girls this great game. My philosophy has been that when a kid moves on from my team (and I hope most don't) that the next coach is thankful that the player knows ______________ (fill in the blank) examples: how to back up a base, how to tag up, how to throw properly, etc etc. I don't need the credit...but want the player moving on to have a good foundation and the next coach have one less thing to teach them. Enjoy the journey!

My 15 year old DD and I coached a 10U team last fall and had a blast. Per another post above, our goals were to have fun and get better, and we did both. We were 3-10, but everyone had a great time. Unfortunately only one girl wanted to stick with us this spring (a few went back to their previous team, a few are playing up, and a few are playing other sports). Our club director said he can get her onto another team and he needs an 8U coach, so I'm moving down. This will actually be easier in some ways, mainly that it's coach pitch so we don't have to develop pitchers.

So how did your granddaughter end up on the dark side of the plate? (just a joke catcher parents! :)
Pitching was your thing! :)

Time flies.....I have one now and can't wait for her to get old enough.

That sounds a lot like my philosophy. I've met a lot of people over my years in baseball. I already have two high school girls lined up to come help with pitching. Every parent I have spoken to said that in the past there have been a chosen few in pitching, and their kid didn't get a chance. I told them that I am a strong believer in EVERY kid pitches, at least in practice, and their girl will get her shot. I truly dislike baseball coaches who ride the same 2 pitchers every game. Yes, we might loose, but a 9 year old doesn't need muscle complications due to overuse!
