I see some pitchers literally lift their drive foot off the rubber and back down on it as they drive off. Is this legal in Fastpitch softball based on Usssa etc rules ? I can sure understand why you may want to. Mechanically it’s like a running start. But is it legal. ?

No its not legal... Its often referred to as a "gym step" in most sanctioning org.
Both feet must be in contact with the rubber prior to the outward drive...
However, several different state High School rules will in fact allow a step backwards as a load. Check with your state rules before allowing your dd to attempt.
That rule is in effect in Indiana, however a lot of umpires aren't aware of it and will still call an IP... be sure to clarify with the state rules and the plate umpire first.

I would say most good pitchers do this to some extent. I have rarely seen it called except in circumstances where the pitcher was stepping way to high.

Most pitchers are so quick with this movement and it's so hard to see in real time. Some do a slide and then step or rock then step.

Monica Abbott abuses this step.

Another great reason to teach it to your players. She was one of the best ever.

ROFL.

The most commented pitching video I have is a really great slow motion video of Abbott. It shows her body motion in really great detail...and the only comments are about her "illegal" pitch. (I have no ideas what the pitching rules are in the Japanese Pro League, but I trust their umps know them better than me.)

Kind of like seeing the Mona Lisa and then complaining about the frame.
