So yesterday we arrive at the USA Preps Fastptich National Championships and my 10YO son looks at me and says "Dad, this can't be nationals, we're in Palmdale!"

Backstory: for those not from this area, Palmdale/Lancaster is about 1.5 hours north of Los Angeles, semi desert dust bowl and in the summer is known for 100+ heat and a constant 20mph wind. Why this area hosts so many softball tournaments is beyond comprehension?

Went over my head but ..

We have a boring 4 softball felds with a stone washroom and minI consesion stand in middle with a 5th field if needed.

DD likes playing there more then anywhere, we got lucky. Lot of great people if something is going on.

A friend's daughter qualified for a soccer tournament to be played in....Palmdale. Trying to be the city of champs for youth sports?? : )

My understanding of the situation: In an effort to direct more "tourism" dollars into that area, the County of Los Angeles makes the fields available at a very, very low cost. With 8 diamonds at the Big 8 and another 8 at BOW/MK a few miles away, it's a tournament director's dream.

The large number and availability of fields are the main appeal since fields in more desirable areas are very difficult to book. I expect their prices also reflect lower demand.
