D2 or D3 schools would NOT be competitive in the power five conferences. They might win a few fall scrmmages, but that's a far cry from being competitive over a full conference schedule. Mid major conferences, sure. SEC, Pac 12 or Big 12. No way.

There are almost 400 division 1 softball programs out there of which you are accounting for about 40. Lets even say, yes, the top 100, 150 even, are out of the league of solid D2 and D3 schools but that still leaves a lot of room for comparisons.

According to Gold Fastpitch only 12 2020's have committed. I am sure there are more, but it is just the beginning for this class. The kids that verbal in 8th grade have to be something pretty special. Keep your blinders on and don't get caught up in the hype.

I am sure that number is a little low too.

Out those 12 that are listed I would be very courious what college D1 coach is willing to part with a full ride scholarship on a kid just entering HS. This whole process of recruiting 8th graders and freshman (as was discussed in another thread) has got to stop. It is crazy in my mind. My guess is they may get a preferred walkon agreement with the opportunity at dollars as the coach sees them progress on or maybe 25%. No numbers to back that up but that is my guess. What kid in 8th grade can say for sure what they want to study in college or that yes this is my dream school. NCAA step up and put some strick restrictions in place to stop this madness.

I agree completely. There are plenty of terrific teams at all levels and there's more to picking a school than the division the play in. My statement was in regards to the claim that "most top D2 and D3 are competitive in tougher D1 conferences".

It does happen, we know a 2020 my daughter has played with who verballed to tennesse. You just can't teach things like 5'10" and 2.8 home to first, but it's few and far between

You are very much mistaken if you think that schools are giving 25% scholarships for softball(excluding flame throwing pitchers). With incoming freshman classes between 5-15 players the math just doesn't add up. 5% scholarship is more realistic for athletic. The rest is academic. Word to the wise: Don't underfund those 5-7-9 education accounts so that you can travel across the country and watch Sally play softball. Only do the travel if you can still afford to fund the accounts. Otherwise little Sally might not be able to afford to accept the scholarship that she is offered.

This summer 2018 and 2019 recruits will be in "prime time" and 2020 STUDS will see a lot of activity.

You are very mistaken. Not every team oversigns like that. I know for a fact that a girl on DD's team got a 25%:scholly to a major conference top 25 team in the fall of her senior year. She was not committed elsewhere.

What position? The talk of 25%-100% is few and far between. It is not the norm. Div 1 have 12 scholarships to give out, and Div 2 have 7.2. The math just doesn't add up. Especially if you aren't a pitcher/catcher. There will be some positions where players get a full ride. That just leaves fewer for the rest of the team to split up. My point is that I think parents are misinformed if they think that little Sally is going to pay for school with softball alone.

JJS you seem knowledgeable I'm just trying to understand your math, please bear with me. Even if they gave out 6 100%, they could give out 12 50% for an 18-player roster. Just looked at Florida Gator roster, they carry 19. Are there a bunch of red-shirts or five-year players that stretch out the numbers somehow?

How many 100%s does a top 25 team have to give out in order to recruit the top tier players they need? Can they get away with just funding three or four pitchers and one or two position players at 100%?

How many 100%s can a top 25 team deliver if you count academic money with it, ie, 50% softball + 50% academic?

Any thoughts appreciated. Hard to see where the 5%s come in....
