Verbals are with the coach, not the school, and the level of commitment varies by coach. Make sure you understand the parameters of the offer and do your due diligence on the coach.

The following was posted on UCS recently (Pulling Verbals)...

SEC coaches do not believe any Verbal made prior to the start of a player's Junior year to be binding on either the player or college. Either maybe release from the Verbal by notifying the other party. SEC coaches have been letting all the travel ball teams they deal with on this policy for over a year.

Also, many colleges will pull a verbal if the player gets into trouble, academics falter or the player fails to progress as a player prior to signing a NLI. Most college coaches when they verbal a player make it known what they expect out of the player to keep the agreement.

IBM presents "you make the call"......your DD is verballed to EBU (East Bumble University) and she has a 50% verbal offer and it will cost $15K/year out of pocket (half of $30K/year). Your DD is playing at a tournament and Patrick Murphy, head coach at Alabama, see her hit 6 home runs and make several gold glove plays in the field at a showcase and decides to offer your DD a full ride on the spot. What do you do?

A) Tell Coach Murphy, "thanks for the offer, but we are verballed to EBU and are going to stick with our verbal commitment"?
B) Tell Coach Murphy, "DD would love to attend Alabama, where do we sign"?
C) Tell the coach at EBU that Alabama just offered your DD a full ride and ask for advice?
D) Tell the coach at EBU that Alabama just offered a full ride and can they match it?
E) Other?

Am I aging myself with the "IBM presents "you make the call"" reference? LOL I wish they still had those during football games.

Roll Tide Roll! And if the HC of EBU has any principles whatsoever he wishes you all the best. This is probably not the first time it has happened to EBU.

You should make that post a "poll"...

A lot depends on your relationship with EBU, the age of your DD and how likely Bama will be satisfied with her performance.

- It would be tough to bail on EBU if you've developed a good relationship with them over an extended period of time, were satisfied with their offer when you accepted and are very confident they're committed to your DD.

- If your DD isn't a junior yet, Bama's offer is soft according to the info I posted earlier.

- If your DD just had an unreal day and her normal performance isn't up to Bama's par, DD's prospects aren't good there.

You have to gauge the risk/reward of taking the Bama offer - you may end up with more or you may end up with less/nothing.

I say let EBU know about the offer and ask their advice.

You're talking about 4-5 yrs and the foundation of her adult life. If she is verbally committed to a particular school because of kneejerk, had a friend sign, had a major she wanted, or whatever reason. Then school #2 comes along with more tradition, nationally known and better program then, if it is what she wants, has every right to entertain that or any other offer she desires! What is the college coaches job once she gets on campus? Start looking for someone that is better to replace her. The coaches have all the power to cut or pull scholarships and this is about the only time the student athlete has the power to make such impacting decisions. If my kid was verballed at Handkerchief State University and Bama came calling, as much as I HATE them, I would be screaming Roll Tide!
