Northwestern is up 7-1 in the 4th, and then:
Northwestern bring in new pitcher with the score tied, and one runner on. And, of course, the batter hits one over the fence--score is 9-7, Iowa
So, as the pitcher's crazy daddy, would you say:
(A) "That error by 2B killed you."
(B) "You had it under control, I don't know why the coach lifted you for that clearly inferior pitcher."
(C) "The umpire wasn't giving you the corners!"
In my hey day, I would have gone with (A). (B) is a little too dismissive of the second pitcher. (C) is a classic, but should be saved for those days when you don't get a scorekeeper who understands that 100 MPH ground balls can be fielded just as easily as slow rollers.
- Walk
- HBP
- Passed ball
- walk
- pop up to pitcher (one out)
- single (2 runs score) 7-3
- strike out (two outs)
- Error by pitcher
- walk (1 run scores) 7-4
- error by 2B (3 runs score)-- 7-7 The ball was hit so hard that it scalded the outfield grass...but, hey, Ozzie Smith could have fielded it.
