It is somewhat complicated.

At its simplest, almost no one gets a full ride with just pure athletic money.

Most people who claim their kid is getting a 'free ride' are using a combination of athletic and academic scholarships with whatever other sources of money they can get access to (grants, govt programs, etc, etc) to get their out of pocket to zero. And frankly that is a fair way to measure it - if all your costs are covered, who really cares the mix of sources the money is coming from. If I am zero out of pocket - that is a 'free ride' to me no matter how you look at it.

Some people they just 'forget' to include all the misc costs - for example they might not be including things like the cost of boarding in their 'full ride' claim.

Or in some cases they just lie about it...

The real $ number people should be worried is 'out of pocket' cost. For example of 50% of $50000 still leaves you $25k out of pocket while 25% of $10,000 leaves you $7.5k out of pocket - so who is getting the real deal?

For those I know getting ACTUAL full athletic scholarships rides... mainly a few #1 pitchers. That is really about it. Even then, if you can get other sources, then coaches want their players to access them because it means they can move their limited funds around.

This is what my DD's catching coach said from her experience. Frsh-50%, soph 50%, Jr 75%, Sr 100%. She also set the all time HR record for the school. It's rare that a player get's a full 100% scholly. Some amazing pitchers can command that much but with only 12 scholly's for a full roster that is very difficult. It's much easier to give 24 50% scholly's. You do the math. Those amazing academic kids that get a bunch of merit money can help though. Doesn't really matter where the money comes from as long as you are contributing.

I remember wondering why the teams in D1 had so many players on the team seemed crazy to me, so many kids not playing. I looked in to it and found an article from a coach saying he didn’t want nearly the players he had on his team, but the administration made him carry so many because os title IX. I was like oh yea I get it now. Lol

I was talking to a D3 coach recently and he was saying that he takes on players even though he doesn't think they will see the field. They are great for the dugout and he needs the players "just in case". I am sure that goes for any division. As a player you have to consider do you want to chase down the fair balls or the foul balls? Lots of D1 players that get flushed out because they over estimated their abilities or their drive to get better.

This is important to remember - there are no 'guest players' in college - and there are NCAA requirement for an athlete to play. So if you have an injury or someone in ineligible or just drops out, you can't just go out and get another player - you need to pull from the current student body. Not so easy if you are a small college or are carrying a small roster - you often just pull some reserves from the other sports teams on campus.

I even dressed for two sports I had never played in my life in college as a reserve 'just in case'. Didn't see the playing arena either time, but I was only one on-field injury away.

I’ve always been upfront that DD is NOT on a full ride. Part of the reason her scholarship is lower is because she chose her dream school over others that would have given more money. She didn’t hide how bad she wanted to go there so they knew it wouldn’t take much to get her. Another factor as far as I tell is distance. Which makes sense because it costs more to entice a girl from 2,000 miles away than it does from 20 or 200. The coaches job is to fill the roster with the best talent they can. You’re not necessarily going to have a scholarship equal to abilities or playing time. You’re going to get whatever it takes to get your DD on campus.

In the end you can’t worry about what others are getting. Just focus on your DD and if her overall package of athletic, academic, grants and/or loans is within your budget. More importantly is it a school she’d want to be at without softball and will she graduate with a respected degree in her field.

It depends on the team more players the more expense it takes to run the team. Example DD on DIII soft team that traveled to fla last spring. Flying, hotel & eating cost a team that has 'are great for the dugout and he needs the players "just in case"'.
Again every team is different. Another thing to consider. DD's team went to the DIII college world series(1st round). Team could only dress 20 players. So, on DD's team 2 girls could not be in uniform.

I know DD's coach hated making the decisions on who wasn't able to dress. One player was injured. Not sure on why the other player. All the players knew that this was a possibility at the beginning of the season. The latter is 2 girls would have been cut. Might have been 2 different players. Again, I don't know.
