Florida's Tim Walton just committed an 11 year old. Why????? I was watching my 13 DD play basketball last night and I was trying to picture any of these girls 6th to 8th grade having the maturity level to be able to make such a life altering decision. These kids don't even know if they are wearing clean underwear!

I think Tim Walton is committing as many children as possible so he can doesn't have to do any recruiting for the next 6 years once the rules change. Two 7th graders and a 6th grader. Face palm! On a side note: My DD's new HS Asst coach was asking her why she committed so soon....she's a Junior. Obviously two people living in two universes.

This is not a problem with the players...the system is broke.

Ridiculous, absurd, I wish I could be more articulate about how I feel about this.

Agreed it not a problem with the players, the system is broken and the coaches that do this seem completely selfish and not thinking in the true best interest of these children.

Un-effing-believable...and yet so very believable at the same time. I do not blame this little girl, as she is just a product of an effed up system. Walton has given up all pretense of giving a crap about right and wrong and is actively thumbing his nose at the rest of the DI world...or maybe he knows exactly what he is doing and is making these ridiculous offers to point out just how broken the current system is in an effort to make sure the early recruiting proposal passes (and no, I have no proof of either. I'm just ranting a bit).

Don’t kid yourself. New rules will not change this. It will just be conducted on the downlow.

College coaches are all pretending they're disgusted at early verbals yet they all keep recruiting kids kids younger and younger.

It is absolutely ridiculous. It is a coach problem, not a player problem. I told my husband last night when we heard the news I feel like coaches are playing a game of Hungry, Hungry Hippo and trying to see who can collect the most marbles before the game is over. There are several schools doing it but others are being quieter about it.

But have you ever seen this kid play? She has fielding lessons right before my daughter on Thursdays with the same coach. Nice girl and absolutely fantastic. So happy for her regardless. It's not her fault that recruiting is out of control. You know when you get a personal shout out from Jen Schroeder on your commitment you are doing something.

Just consider who we are talking about and nobody should be surprised. Championships or not simply never impressed me.

Plus what are the odds any of these 11 and 12 yr olds play for Florida my guess is less than 25% and that is probably being generous.

Tim Walton is stockpiling verbals of players he think have a good chance of being STUDS before the recruiting rules are changed. I think he as a 6th grader and two 7th graders verballed at this point. Kind of ironic considering he was one of the speakers on the topic advocating for changes to the rules at the NCAA softball convention last month.

Just dumb. My DD is in 8th grade and when she read this news she laughed! Absolutely ridiculous!

Coaches are giving in because of the set of rules in place. That’s why we, as parents, have to draw the line. No way kid’s that age understand the decisions they are making! Somewhat frequently a coach or instructor will mention playing in college to 11yo DD and I immediately stop the conversation. I want to protect her from any implied anxiety that goes along with that. I just want her to love the game for the competition and having fun. No kid that age should have that kind of pressure!!
