Heard through a knowledgeable source the umpires have been instructed not to call anything that would be controversial with the coaches because the NCAA does not want it on TV.

Comp, if that's the case then they ought to just change the rule and have done with it. Time for the NCAA to take some responsibility instead of making the umpires look bad.

Agreed. Source was not real happy about it. Last I heard NCAA said they had to study the effects of allowing leaping on the female body. Interesting considering they have been allowing them to leap by default for years and I have yet to see any of them keel over because of it. As a fellow umpire has stated many times, all the college coaches want it called, just on the other teams pitcher not theirs. The coaches propose and vote on the rules, they just have to vote to change it.

I thought that the Auburn Pitcher skipped a time or two. However, UCLA's pitcher qualified for frequent flyer miles by the end of the 1st inning. If the NCAA dictated that rules not be enforced, then it is making a mockery of the game. Then again, the NCAA made sure that the camera didn't catch those kids fooling around in the dugout. Priorities!

Warning - look away if you don't like repetitive rants:

Leaping Schmeaping. Leaping does not matter. No advantage. In a car race analogy it's like banning all red cars from competition.

Now replanting - which I will submit Carda would lose 5-10mph if she had to stop. In the same racing analogy it would be like banning a Formula-1 car from a Stock Car event.

Ban the Formula-1 cars from racing with the stock cars or make this a Formula-1 race where all can step up their vehicle (and replant).

It is all about good television and ratings. These games are making money for ESPN, NCAA, SEC, etc.. Dugout shenanigans helps the ratings, where IP's hurt. To your point if the NCAA is picking and choosing which rules they enforce it is certainly a mockery of the game as UCLA and other schools should have never made it into a regional competition. That said, for some teams "the fix is in" courtesy of the NCAA.
