On April 12, RMU's number 1 pitcher pitched both games of a double header (14 innings) and pitched two shutouts. Conference games.

On April 15, RMU's number 2 pitcher pitched 7 innings in game one and 4 innings of game two and then the team forfeit. Non-conference games.

On April 18, RMU's number 1 pitched both games of a double header. 14 innings. Conference games.

On April 19, RMU's number one pitched the first 9 innings of a double header. Conference games.

So... why couldn't RMU's number one have pitched one inning on April 15?

I don't know the whole story, but if its true that his pitcher was fatigued and his pitching staff is thin for whatever reason and no one else could pitch. Then he put his player's safety and wellbeing ahead of the game, you know he knew he would be punished and probably be blasted for it, yet he did it.

if its all as I wrote, then he is a stand up guy and my dd could play for him anytime.

As I said, if she was available and healthy, then the coach had a better solution to his problem than the one he chose.

Until coach talks, however, I think it's hard to make a final judgment of the coach and his character. Perhaps he did something that didn't seem out of line at the time, but that he now regrets. He's got one legit pitcher. She's already over-worked. He wants to save her for conference games. He is losing 16-3. In the heat of the moment, he sees no harm in throwing in the towel 1 inning early for the best interest of his team. Maybe now, he sees why that was a bad idea.

I'm not trying to say this is no big deal. He should be suspended (based on the ever-changing facts as I know it), but if the coach would discuss it and say the right things, I'd be willing to forgive it.

If he's all about player safety, why does he make his number one pitch both games of conference double headers?

RMU's conference games:

3/29 v. Mount St. Mary's: Number 1 pitches both games of DH, 14 innings
3/30 v. Sacred Heart: Number 1 pitches both games of DH, 12 innings (26 innings in two days)
4/12 v. Bryant: number 1 pitches both games of DH, 14 innings
4/18 v. LIU: number 1 pitches both games of DH, 14 innings
4/19 v. Wagner: number 1 pitches first 9 innings of DH (23 innings in two days), number 2 pitches final 3 innings of a blowout

Yep, coach is all about player safety. Actually, he's all about conference wins.

Of course he's all about conference wins. Nothing wrong with that.

Maybe the coach is as diabolical as you say, but until he speaks, all I know is that he chose to throw in the towel with 1 inning left because he saw nothing to gain from it and potentially something to lose. They were losing 16-3. At the time, maybe he didn't see the big deal. Now, perhaps he does.

As always it will be interesting to hear the rest of the story at some point. Maybe his ace and the other girl (a pretty decent pitcher, trust me should would not feel embarrassed on the mound) did not travel....the more all this unravels it seems like a coach who does not really care about any kind of sportsmanship and has his own little kingdom (the proverbial big fish in a little pond) plus he does not have to worry about any repercussion from the AD since he is the AD. If this was some kind of payback for making them play a double header when they did not want to it might be interesting to see if other coaches push back in the next couple years when schedules are made but I am sure he could care less about the two game suspension.

From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:

* Shame on Robert Morris athletic director and softball coach Craig Coleman who, with his team behind, 16-3, to Youngstown State last week, made the decision not to finish the game. Coleman was suspended for two games by the NCAA for this low-grade sportsmanship.

Yep, he has #1 pitch the conference games and #2 pitch the non-conf. He got several non-conf opponents to reduce DHs to single games, but YSU wouldn't agree to make the trip for 1 game.

- 4/01: #2 pitched all 7 innings of game that was originally scheduled as DH. "Partly cloudy, mid 50s, nice"
- 4/10: #2 pitched all 6 innings of game that was originally scheduled as DH. "Mostly cloudy, low 50s"
- 4/15: #2 pitched all 11 innings of YSU DH where 2nd game was forfeited.
- 4/22: #2 pitched all 4 innings of run-rule loss (visitors) that was originally scheduled as DH.

Reportedly, the 3rd pitcher left the team ("personal reasons") and a walk-on also chose not to stay on team. He stuck with his plan even though #1 should have been available to throw a couple innings on 4/15 - 3 days after previous games and 3 days before next games. I'd bet she threw bullpens in that stretch.
