The NCAA softball rules committee is mostly made of of coaches. They are full invested in the illegal pitch enforcement.

They all want it called.......on the other team's pitchers!

Yup...and guess who the pac10 regional rep is, you know, the guy who makes decisions about whether infractions are being called evenly? A UCLA Assistant coach. Word has it he is also a Freemason and a member of the skull and bones society muhuhuhahahah

I would be in favor of completely changing the pitching rule set. If it was up to me, the pitcher could do walk thru's if they want as long as they a) started on the pitching plate; and b) stayed behind the front of the circle when they delivered the pitch. Let's give some control of the game back to the pitchers, the pendulum has swung way too far to the offense with the composite bats, short fences, batter's body armor (evo shields) and small strike zone. No more capricious and arbitrary IPs called....

As I said numerous times before, I would have no problems with changing the pitching rules as long as they enforced whatever new rule set they put in place on EVERY pitch of EVERY game. Right now, this isn't happening.

I'm not challenging you or arguing, but I will play Devil's Advocate here. So when there's two umpires to a game, whose responsible for calling IP's via the feet? My understanding, and I could be entirely off-base since I'm not an ump, is that it's the BU's and they should be standing at the furthest point no more than 40' or so. Are you telling me they can't see the same thing we are seeing at home in real time from a camera, even zoomed in to approximately the same distance, from high over LCF? I would much rather go with the conspiracy theorists on this one than believe that:eek:
Playing Devil's Advocate... lol I thought "close up and in slow motion" was clear that I wasn't referring to regular live shots, but evidently not. "Close up" is zoomed in more than regular shot and "slow motion" certainly isn't live action.

Regarding your DA points, there is an additional responsibility whenever runners are on base and BU's are definitely more than 40' away. It's 40' from the pitcher's plate to 2B and an umpire is well behind 2B. Umpires at 1B/3B are likewise positioned farther than 40' away. Live action shots are typically zoomed as if inside the bases.

Here is an opinion piece regarding male vs. female fastpitch rules: Outdated Pitching Rules Great softball pitching hints and recommendations for girl softball pitchers

I couldn't agree more. Women work just as hard as men; we want to play sports to our full capability, without rules added in to make the game harder. Running (swimming?) is pretty much the only sport that I can think of that is truly gender-equal. How strange would it be if there was a rule that female runners were limited by a maximum stride-length?

Edit to add: I would venture a guess that umpires hate the rule just as much as coaches, players and fans do.

UmpSteve posted that yesterday and went on to explain why more are called in postseason.

UmpSteve said:
... They don't want it called on THEIR PITCHER, and the umpires know that, in most cases, the umpire coordinators that schedule them will stop scheduling them when enough high profile coaches complain about them.

We aren't assigned by the NCAA. Did you know that? We are assigned by conference coordinators, hired/selected by the conferences, not elected or selected or even responsive to the umpires that they choose to assign. In effect, they work for the conference, and the conference staff works for and answers to the schools and the coaches. If someone not feeling particularly supported by that coordinator, or is marginally on that staff, they aren't going to make waves and have the coaches complain about them.

UmpSteve said:
Just wanted to add one more point. Does anyone think it is ironic or strange that illegal pitches are called more notably during NCAA Regional, Super Regional, and WCWS games?? And why the coaches get so much more upset at that point??

Yes, it's a bigger stage; yes, each game means a great deal. But, here's my point; those games are when the umpires DO work directly for the NCAA, not their conference. So the coaches lose their main weapon, the sword they wield, that they can pressure their coordinator to keep that umpire from working their games. It's easier to do what you know is right when 1) the incessant and repetitive replays will show your call was accurate and based on the rule, so the offending coach can't claim you were wrong to make the call (even if Michelle Smith keeps botching the rule and claims it gains no advantage, anyway), and 2) the coach can't keep you from working future games for doing the right thing instead of having to think up reasons not to make the call.

So that's when the coaches use that stage to berate the calls they didn't want made earlier. I liken that argument to telling the judge he can't rule you guilty for speeding because you drive that speed every day and haven't gotten a ticket every day.

And I cannot even count the amount of times Ive seen the hitters lean over the plate to get a hit-by-pitch, and they are rewarded a base.
Saw one the other day where the batter swung through the plate, the replay showed the ball tipping back off the bat, and the girl jumped up and down and told the blue it hit her on the finger and he gave her the base!
