Any chance you would share those drills? I've had a hard time finding explosion/speed drills.

thanks.

Sure - I'm absolutely no guru. We do much of this in the gym because we tryout before Christmas break and start the week they return from Christmas break (gives those that don't make team a couple of weeks to get over it) so we usually have primarily indoor practices Jan/Feb.

I started using Marc's dynamic warm-ups as well. Examples of speed drills:
high knees down - lunge back; donkey kicks down - lung back; cross overs down - lunge back; bear crawls down lunge back; high knee skips down - lunge back; back peddle down - sprint back; Everything is always at least 25 - 40 yds. As you can see, I'm a big fan of lunges - a softball player's best friend in my opinion. We use a parachute to break up things. Also, once we get outside we pull a tire (use harness), run the football players' ropes, tires and push the sleds on occasion. I might add we are careful about warm up and stretching - especially in Winter.

Billy,
I was interested in the same question, and have had a difficult time getting concise answers. I just timed my DD (7 1/2 year old) off of video at a recent silver level 8U game from contact to first base touch (60'). She is right handed and ran it in 4.60 seconds off a full swing to third base side, and she is considered fast by almost all who watch her. She is the fastest on our team, at least, and we've just finished our all-star season 23-1, beating up the top southern California silver level teams. I haven't seen many faster than her on the 8U level, but I also wonder how she projects.

Humpty,
Are these times with a swing from soft toss, or simply 60' straight runs? What side of box is batter? Nice improvement on your times! I will need to look into adding some similar workout program.

I coach a 10U TB team. When we started a year ago we were:
Fastest - 4 seconds
Slowest 5.5 seconds

Now a year later with lots of practice:
Fastest 3.2
Slowest 4.8

These are Right side, swing the bat, drop the bat and run for your life...
We have timed it on bunts and soft toss and dry swings all were in these ranges +/- a bit.

This was due to lots of practice

Um wow!

Just tested almost 100 12u players. Fastest was 3.7 and that was without swinging a bat. I have to think the bat swing takes at least a second. Have you notified the olympic commitee?

Umm...Typo...
Fastest time is 3.5
and it is 2 players who are very fast.....I promise I would gladly put them against some who are older.
The rest run out between 3.8-4.5 with two slowest around 4.8 consistently.
They swing, We start time at first step so no the swing does not apply to the time we take. Yes it would probably add .75 or more to the time.

No swing. Standing start home to first. All rh batters. The girls love the instant feedback and competition on the timed ladder and cone drills. DD ran 14.87 home to home the other day. Her personal best. We are experimenting with different turns around the bases. Which is fastest?
