I am trying to teach my 9 year olds how to slide. We've worked on this a few times, many have gotten a little better but they still don't have it down and are still doing things a little dangerous like digging their cleats into the ground....We have used a cardboard box to help get used to it and have considered using a slip and slide as well but I would love to hear other suggestions on how you have taught your girls?

Did both of what you mentioned above and also had them bring sneakers to practce so their foot would not get caught up.

DD plays on a low level 18U TB team, we have at least 1 player that will not slide and a couple that start their slide a foot from the base.

Wish you luck, 9 year olds are fearless. Absolutely worth spending time on age this age.

One thing we did at your age too was a must slide rule at home. Team rule, not a league rule. We wanted to make sure they slide in games.

Had a team practice in the grass in their socks to eliminate the cleat catch. Yes the grass stained socks was not a favorite but it worked because they could feel the heel dig more. Helped them get their feet up.

Slip and slide is how I learned and how I taught. But can still be dangerous if they aren't getting down. (falling backward) If they get on their hip the feet work out. I like to focus on that.

We do suicide style relay races in the outfield in the grass. Usuall at the end of practice. Creates lots of reps of sliding and its a race so its fun.
