More importantly it definitly not the coach's job to go out of his/her way to explain every decision to players/parents.

I don't entirely agree with this. I almost always tell my players why I'm doing something if it's different from what I usually do. I think that communication is important.

That doesn't mean I sit down with every player and explain why she's in her particular spot in the order every game, but if I'm dropping someone or changing something drastically, I'll tell them why. Sometimes it's "you've been struggling lately" and sometimes it's just "I want to try something different today." But when a girl who tends to bat 2 is batting 9 one day, I feel that if I don't talk to her, she's going to be wondering if she's being punished, if she did something wrong, etc. Cuts out a lot of potential issues when you just talk to them.

Of course, all that may not really matter for 10u.

Interesting batting order conversation in general. As currently a 10U coach, I try to construct my hitting lineup strong-weak-strong-weak-etc to minimize the chances of a 3up/3down innings. My current thought is to move to an order that is the same and just change where the start of the rotation is. Come district finals time, I'll try to win but the rest of the league games I'm trying to develop players and throw in some wins for the confidence boost.
